Job Description
Basketball is the second biggest team sport in England. As a community we are more than basketball. We have a rich and diverse culture like no other sport. Its value to local communities and power to change lives is immense. Basketball England (as the national governing body) has been developing new conditions for the sport in collaboration with its members and wider stakeholders to bring basketball to the forefront of the nation. We are poised to play a greater part in society, share the joy and excitement of basketball and engage more young people of all backgrounds and abilities to take the sport forward in a rapidly changing society.
In 2018 we launched our 6-year strategic plan (HERE) underpinned by a research and development period to create a direction for the sport and the wider interests in basketball. Our focus is on growth and providing accessible quality opportunities at all levels in the game. We will use the power of basketball to accelerate this and gather more support to help resource the growth and innovation we have planned for. People and their passion for the game is at the heart of our player led approach to make things happen and make basketball infectious.
It is the most exciting time to be involved in the game and be part of the transformation ahead of us as we get Game Ready for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 to win medals and leverage a legacy for a new basketball presence in England.
We are now seeking to recruit a new Chair to lead us through this next period of growth and development, creating the conditions to deliver our strategic plan and help develop the key relationships with partners to gather the resources to make this happen.
Key responsibilities and skills required:
* To provide leadership to the sport and to the Board, ensuring the effective management of governance and oversight processes, whilst adopting a strategic approach to increasing basketball participation and development
* To act as a thought leader for the sport in England, overseeing the further development of commercial income
* To chair the board meetings, get the best from the board members and the CEO, creating the conditions for a high performing governing body and a successful sport
* Galvanise key and wider stakeholders so the collective contribute to the game brings basketball to the forefront of the nation
50% of our meetings are at our head office in Manchester, the remainder are held across the regions. Candidates for the position should be able to demonstrate experience of board leadership, possess a customer-led approach and a passion for sport. You will need to have the ability to develop and nurture relationships with various stakeholder groups and should act and take decisions in an open and transparent manner. There is a stipend payable with the position, with the time expectation in the region of two days a month.
Term of Appointment: A period of 3 years with the opportunity for this to be extended for a second 3-year term.
Time commitment: Around 2 days a month, plus major event attendance There are 6 Board meetings and a Board planning and review day per year (each one day in duration). The locations vary between the Basketball England offices in Manchester and chosen locations across the regions.
