Full-Time Human Resources Specialist

Job Description

Status: Regular, full-time, non-exempt

Pay: $27 per hour

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The human resources department is dedicated to building a strong and healthy workplace by engaging and developing employees, building trust and teamwork, and providing excellent Human Resources services. Under the supervision of the Human Resources Director, the Human Resources Specialist will work closely with the HR Director on employee issues/concerns and will oversee the leave of absences/accommodations requests.

DUTIES:

Employee Relations

  • Maintains a high level of professionalism. Discreetly handles sensitive and/or private information
  • Investigates assigned sensitive and/or complex employee relations matters which may include conducting intake, leading interviews, note-taking, gathering and/or analyzing evidence (electronic, physical, etc.)., document findings, and following up with the relevant parties.
  • Documents investigations and summarizes findings in a report.
  • Manages employee suggestion survey.

Leave of Absence /Accommodation Requests

  • Oversees and administers Leave of Absence requests and accommodation requests. This includes: Bereavement Leave, FMLA, CFRA and other types of leaves.
  • Communicates with employees regarding their responsibilities and of any documentation and notice required to qualify for and to take leave.
  • Handles leave administration process from the employee’s initial notice to the return to work.
  • Maintains reasonable communication between employees, supervisors and payroll within reason to facilitate a smooth and timely return to work.
  • In collaboration with the human resources director, engages in an interactive process when managing an accommodation request.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with specified legal requirements and documentation of best practices.
  • Preserves confidentiality of employee medical documentation and files.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable leave and accommodation laws including FMLA, CFRA, ADA and local laws.
  • Manages Human Resources communication including HR Newsletter

Other Duties

  • Responds to employment verifications and employee verification letter requests.
  • Administers HR line and email for employee related concerns/requests.
  • Assists in conducting exit interviews for staff members who resign.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Communication, or related field Required.
  • Minimum of 4+ years’ experience in Human Resources.
  • Experience with employee relations and investigating employee concerns.
  • Demonstrated experience with mediation and effective conflict resolution, facilitation and consultation skills.
  • Knowledge of HR functions and understanding of state and labor laws
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Strong ethics and reliability
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; apply good judgment in decision making.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills and strong human relations skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to develop productive working relationships; to establish credibility with all levels of leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities/projects simultaneously and deliver quality results on deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations / individuals
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and outstanding organizational skills
  • Strong computer proficiency; Excellent in MS Office applications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.
  • Stand: Remaining on one’s feet in an upright position.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot.
  • Lifting: Raising or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) 25-50 lbs
  • Carrying: Transporting an object, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder
  • Pushing: Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force.
  • Pulling: Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking)
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending stairs, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.
  • Finger Movement: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
