Job Description
Salary: $180,000 – $220,000 per year
One Degree is a completely remote organization, however, staff should be available for some Pacific time hours to align with the majority of coworkers. Candidates must be eligible to work and be based in the United States. We are not able to provide sponsorship at this time.

Position Description:
Reporting to the CEO, the Head of Development & Partnerships serves as a key executive team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting One Degree. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all revenue generation activities, including fundraising, sales, partnership development, and external communications. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build One Degree’s visibility, impact, and financial resources.
The Head of Development & Partnerships will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $7.2M budget through both development (major gifts and foundation support) and sales (business development) with a long-term goal of $20M in annual revenue. This is a highly visible, externally facing executive-level position. Although this role is remote, the ideal candidate will be based in and/or have established relationships in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or New York City.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Strategy & Management
- Actively work with the CEO and executive team to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for revenue generation, partnerships, and external communications
- Collaborate with the CEO and COO to develop and implement One Degree’s financial strategy
- Build, develop, and mentor revenue generation and communications team
- Monitor, evaluate, and report regularly on the progress of revenue generation and communications initiatives and make recommendations for improvement
- Fundraising
- Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives
- Hold primary responsibility for the fundraising pipeline and moves management
- Oversee the development of the pipeline of potential funders for One Degree through networking and researching individuals, corporations, and foundations
- Develop and execute all proposals
- Build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders, including foundations, individuals, and partner organizations
- Sales/Business Development
- Drive the sales process in collaboration with the team to identify and research potential clients, develop and manage strategic partnerships, and maintain client relationships
- Support and oversee a cross-functional team of sales and account managers to drive revenue generation
- Coordinate with a cross-functional sales team to develop proposals and RFPs and prepare and submit sales contracts
- Negotiate contract terms with clients and communicate with stakeholders
- External Communications: Develop and oversee the external communications strategy, including media relations, marketing, and social media
Qualifications:
Development/Fundraising experience – 10-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with proven success in cultivating 6, 7, and 8-figure major gifts. You bring a depth of experience and best practices for development infrastructure, planning, and growth-oriented strategy. You love making the “ask,” putting numbers on the table, and leading prospective partners to close.
A love for big gifts and contracts – This position exists to secure big gifts and contracts. They must live by the mantra, “We need 30 big funders to get everything we need…my job is to go get those 30.”
Self-motivated, self-driven self-starter – You have the ability to work both highly independently without close oversight, while also being a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside One Degree.
Bias for action and speed – You thrive in a fast-paced, emergent environment. You can process a great deal of information from multiple sources. You are able to toggle rapidly between strategic and tactical thinking.
Excellent communication skills – You have the ability to influence and engage a wide range of stakeholders and build long-term relationships through both written and verbal communication.
Highly relationship-oriented – You are skilled in recall, capitalizing on network knowledge to cultivate new and strengthen existing relationships.
High energy and passion for One Degree’s mission – you are passionate about empowering people to achieve social and economic mobility.
Project and team management – You have strong supervisory and project management experience and can create, delegate, and oversee project timelines and plans.
Foundational knowledge of the history and realities of systemic racism, intersectionality, and oppression in the United States – you have an understanding of how U.S. systems deepen inequities, are fluent in the core precepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and can apply DEI skills in real-world situations while continuing to learn and grow personally and alongside the One Degree team.
Ability to work effectively in a virtual environment – you can build authentic relationships while working remotely and are familiar with Google Apps, CRM (Salesforce experience strongly preferred), and project management software.
Low ego and nonhierarchical – You love working on a team of humble and passionate individuals, and you understand that the communities we serve and our team members closest to them are the experts on One Degree. You believe that this work is not about you, it is about the mission and those we serve.
Education/Training Requirements:
- 10-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with proven success in cultivating 6, 7, and 8-figure major gifts
- Some sales or business development experience is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree and an advanced degree are both a plus, but not required

One Degree is a completely remote organization, with optional in-person social gatherings every 1-2 months and an in-person retreat 1-2 times a year.
