Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences Area Office Division has an opening for a Computer Systems Engineer. Reporting to the Emery Station East (ESE) Operations lead, the ESE Computer Systems Engineer will work directly with the Lead ESE Computer Systems Engineer to work on all levels of the design, configuration, implementation, operation, and maintenance of computer-oriented systems and networks, including real-time and event-driven systems, databases and database management systems, application systems, operating systems, and data communications related to ESE’s shared computing and instrument controller infrastructure. This position requires an experienced professional with a full understanding of the aspects mentioned above to ensure that the capabilities of the shared computing infrastructure at ESE are sufficient to meet the needs of the research in the building, have sufficient redundancy to avoid the loss of critical data and/or capabilities, and to anticipate and respond to the future needs as equipment ages, software and hardware evolve, and the needs of the facility change.

The ESE CSE works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors, demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and networks with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise.

What You Will Do:
The ESE Computer Systems will act under the guidance of the Lead ESE CSE to provide end to end planning, execution, and ongoing maintenance & support for all of the following functions and systems at ESE, and other support locations:
• Linux System Administration for BioInformatics Systems and other Linux Systems
• Scientific Instrumentation Controllers Support
• Windows System Administration
• Computer Hardware Support
• Cloud Administration
• Storage Administration (FreeBSD)
• Hypervisor Administration
• Database Administration
• JIRA Administration
• Wordpress Administration
• Backup System Administration (including UC Davis infrastructure)
• Monitoring System Administration
• Jupyter Notebooks Administration
• Server Room Administration
• DR Site Administration (UC Davis)
• Data Management for Linux and Cloud Systems (i.e. Backups, Replication)
• Zoom Room Support
• Globus Account Administration
• Liaison between ESE Staff and LBL IT
• Employee Training

The CSE will take on ad hoc projects within their expertise to maintain and enhance the ESE IT infrastructure whenever necessary. The ESE CSE may also provide limited support to personal computing support in situations where workload deems necessary.

What is Required:
• Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience
• Ability to work in a diverse team environment.
• Demonstrated experience processing large volumes of data, whole-genome data analysis, phylogenetics, and comparative genomics.
• Experience installing and executing software and scripts in a UNIX/LINUX environment.
• Working knowledge of PERL and SQL.
• Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills to independently make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to complex problems.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to address user needs in an effective and timely manner.
• Experience with web development using WordPress and Google
• Experience in installation and maintenance of server-based computing and networking hardware
• General Linux System knowledge, in particular Debian and Ubuntu
• Computer Hardware maintenance

• Kubernetes
• Scripting in Python and Bash
• Basic Communication skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
• Able to lift equipment
• Able to work outside of normal business hours

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, in order to service computing server room.

• This is a full-time career appointment.
• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
