This role will be a member of the Feedstock Solutions and Sustainability R&D team at the Centre for Applied Research (CAR). This team delivers new technologies that ensure environmentally sustainable and secure access to cost effective feedstock for NOVA Chemicals.

Our research programs are targeted to:

  • Identify and optimize olefin feedstock technologies that support the transition to a circular economy.
  • Innovate processes that enable a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for our commercial assets.
  • Invent and/or develop catalytic technologies that deliver flexible feedstock options for NOVA Chemical’s business.
  • Develop models and process operating conditions that support scale up of nascent chemical technology.
  • Design and construct laboratory equipment that can be used to validate new chemical technology concepts.
  • Research and assess new value stream opportunities associated with the energy transition and emerging circular economy needs.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Lead or take part in projects that pertain to the exploration, development, and implementation of new catalytic processes.
  • Meet research or other project goals according to budget and aggressive timelines.
  • Collaborate with other engineering, environment, and strategy groups to enable commercialization of new chemical processes.
  • Apply chemical engineering fundamentals, thermodynamics, and mass and heat transfer principles to develop advanced models for design of new processes.
  • Research competitive landscape and execute both technoeconomic and life cycle analysis to compare incumbent and new chemical process technologies.
  • Protect NOVA Chemicals’ intellectual property for new process technology inventions.
  • Investigate nascent technology areas in the competitive, start-up, and academic arena that signify new commercial opportunities for NOVA Chemicals.
  • Prepare presentations to communicate results, findings, and strategy to a diverse audience from individual contributors to senior leadership.

What We Are Looking For:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chemical or Process Engineering with 6+ years of related experience, that includes:

  • Demonstrated experience for leading research projects and cross-functional collaborations for development and implementation of new process technologies.
  • Practiced in comparing economics and environmental impact of process technology options using commercially available data.
  • Proficient in reaction kinetics and process thermodynamics.
  • Experience in static and dynamic process modeling utilizing commercial software packages is an asset.
  • Excellent consultation and communication skills. Must work well in a team setting with cross-functional interactions spanning R&D, Engineering, Marketing, and Manufacturing.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Responsible Care®, strong project and time management capabilities, and aptitude for problem solving/troubleshooting.
