Full-Time ELL/I-BEST LEAD INSTRUCTOR/ COORDINATOR

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This individual co-teaches contextualized Integrated Education and Training (IET) classes using the I-BEST (Integrated Adult Basic Education and Skills Training) and other instructional models to students enrolled in English Language Learning (ELL) and High School Completion (HSC) classes in the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center. Serves as the basic skills/ELL pedagogical expert and literacy-enhancing instructor in cooperation with the content area or career and technical education instructor. Collaborates on curriculum development, implementation, teaching, and coordination of new and current IET classes, including CNC, CDL, CNA, and Hospitality Management.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaches morning and evening IET classes (g., CNC, CDL, CNA, Hospitality Management) as assigned.
  • Develops curriculum, materials, and schedules for new IET classes.
  • Prepares students for postsecondary education and training, employment, and better employment.
  • Serves as ELL and IET liaison to High School Completion (HSC) staff and provides technical support for improved transition and integration of ELLs into HSC coursework, including but not limited to creation and evaluation of accessible content area curriculum.
  • Stays current on research involving IET models of instruction, including I-BEST, student persistence and retention, and teaching of adults.
  • Stays current on labor market and workforce trends and Department of Education initiatives so as to be able to adapt IET/I-BEST/ELL/HSC coursework.
  • Participates in the research and collaboration necessary to ensure success of the IET program and the team-teaching model.
  • Maintains good communication by providing information about current trends and practices, in addition to concerns, issues, and changes within the college and community.
  • Assists with publicity for IET classes and recruitment initiatives.
  • Ensures program compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Maintains program records and collaborates with college personnel on all necessary data tracking and documentation.
  • Makes recommendations for purchases of new teaching materials and equipment for IET classes.
  • Provides professional development for HSC staff as appropriate on AEL, ELL, and IET

  • Collaborates with college and community personnel to ensure increased student retention, achievement, and rates of transition to college.
  • Participates in sector board partnerships and builds relationships with local workforce development, employers, and partners.
  • Attends meetings and participates in committees with community and college groups.
  • Performs other related professional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, TESOL, or related field.
  • One-year teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to team teach.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn skills associated with content in IET classes such as mathematics, machining techniques, blueprint reading, truck driving, nursing assistant skills, food service, and food safety.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using all Google and Microsoft programs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with integrating technology into classroom lessons.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and provide customer service for diverse populations (staff, students, partners, and general public).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings.
  • Ability to work year-round in this 12-month position.

PREFERENCES

  • Teaching or TESOL certification.
  • Experience teaching IET, AEL, ELL, HSC, HiSET, ABE, math, and digital literacy to adults.
  • Experience team teaching and/or implementing IET models, including I-BEST.
  • Experience developing curriculum for new courses.
  • Experience with CNA, CNC, CDL, Hospitality Management, or other trades.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology.  Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.  Work is performed in an office setting.  Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours.  During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computer.
