WRITERS THEATRE

Position: Education Coordinator

Location: Glencoe, IL/Chicago, IL (Hybrid)

Department: Arts Engagement & Education
Reports to: Associate Director of Arts Engagement

Classification: Full-Time Exempt, Benefit Eligible

Salary: $45,000 annually

POSITION SUMMARY

The Education Coordinator is a key member of the theatre’s Arts Engagement and Education department and plays an instrumental role in the company’s educational programming and outreach. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Arts Engagement, their primary responsibility is administration of The Novel Series in-school residency program, Student Matinee series, and ACTIVATE workshops. They will assist with additional programming including onsite day camps and workshops and study guides and will manage the WT Teaching Artist Cohort.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Off-Site Programming

  • Book, plan, manage and oversee curriculum development for all Novel Series in-school residencies.
  • Book, plan and manage the ACTIVATE residency program. Share oversight of curriculum development with the Associate Director of Arts Engagement.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with schools, community organizations and industry partners.
  • Create and evaluate programs and processes through the lens of equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Hire, supervise, motivate and support a team of freelance Teaching Artists.
  • Plan and co-lead with department staff the annual Teaching Artist staff training, which includes ensuring programs are aligned with best practices in the field.
  • Serve as a Teaching Artist in the classroom as necessary.

On-Site Programming

  • Manage the booking and scheduling of Student Matinee performances for Mainstage programming. Assist the Associate Director of Arts Engagement with day-of managing of student matinees for Mainstage programming.
  • Project manage the conceptualization, writing, design and distribution of study guides for mainstage productions, in collaboration with Associate Director of Arts Engagement.
  • Assist with the booking of field trip performances for TYA programming. Develop and maintain lists of school and community contacts and manage onsite day-of engagement, in collaboration with department staff.
  • Plan, develop curriculum for, and teach Spring Break, Summer Break and Pop-Up Day Camps, in collaboration with department staff as needed.
  • Develop curriculum for and teach Family Matinee Series classes as needed, in collaboration with Associate Director of Arts Engagement.

Other Duties

  • Participate actively in the Chicago and national arts education community to stay current on best practices.
  • Collaborate with Associate Director of Arts Engagement on achieving long-term goals for the Arts Engagement & Education department.
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts to support Arts Engagement & Education programs.
  • Contribute content to the department calendar and annual brochure.
  • Analyze and document all programming and report on the programs to major funders.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget and contracts with partner organizations, in collaboration with Associate Director of Arts Engagement.
  • Assist with the recruitment, management, and training of the Education Apprentice.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least one year working in arts education preferred; experience as a teaching artist a must.
  • Intellectual curiosity, drive, and enthusiasm.
  • Passion for live theatre and for working with youth.
  • A highly-motivated, self-starter with the ability to be assertive in demanding community-based settings.
  • Highly-organized and flexible; quick thinking problem-solver, comfortable working under pressure.
  • Understanding of the landscape of the Chicago Public School system or other metropolitan school systems.
  • Experience managing a team of part-time and hourly employees while fostering a positive, collaborative and productive environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite and Google Suite. Tessitura experience a plus.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to comply with organizational COVID safety policies and procedures.
  • A commitment to ethical conduct in all aspects of the work environment.
  • A commitment to creating a just, equitable and inclusive work environment.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the City of Chicago as well as the North and Northwest Suburbs to visit contracted schools as needed.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for periods of time while working at a computer, as well as move about inside the office and theatre buildings to access necessary materials and equipment.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information both written and in-person with internal and external stakeholders.
