Job Summary:
The role of Editor, Children’s at HarperCollins Canada is to acquire and edit a range of fiction and select non-fiction for children for the local publishing program, in the areas of young adult, middle grade, select illustrated titles and IP and commissioned titles. With the Senior Editorial Director, the Editor, Children’s creates and executes a publishing strategy that balances commercially successful books and award contenders. Acquisitions should be made with an eye toward growth and wide market potential as well as literary merit, and the list should show a proven track record for building IP and commissioned books and for financial success for individual titles. The Editor, Children’s should have a strong understanding of the overall publishing program and the role of the children’s program within it. Requirements of the position include editorial experience, knowledge of project-based finances, knowledge of the children’s industry and book-selling market and a proven track record. The role also requires a proactive team player who can work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and who engages in outreach to the community, including established and emerging authors and illustrators, booksellers, librarians, and educators.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Creates and executes acquisitions strategy for the Canadian children’s publishing program: reading approximately 100 manuscripts per year from current authors, literary agents, co-publishers and directly from emerging authors.
• Substantively edits manuscripts with authors and illustrators, including working with fellow editors for co-published titles.
• With Senior Editorial Director as well as Sales and Marketing, creates publishing strategies for key authors on the program.
• Have strong communication with children’s publishing colleagues in Sales and Marketing
• Runs P&Ls for potential acquisitions and book costings for illustrated titles.
• Writes all metadata and jacket copy and maintains a database of quotes, awards, and off-page keywords for all current titles.
• Maintains author care through all stages of publication.
• Contributes to increasing Diversity on the Canadian publishing program
• With the Senior Editorial Director, creates and leads an internal Children’s Summit once per fiscal
• Engages in community outreach to represent HarperCollins’s publishing program and seek out fresh voices at events, on awards juries, in the Author Referral program, Open Inbox initiatives and at writers’ conferences across the country.

Qualifications:
Specific training or job experience required includes:
• A university degree with relevant experience; or college degree with publishing experience
• A minimum of 3 – 5 years related experience
• Experience in Children’s/Young Adult book publishing
• Experience working with authors and illustrators
