We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago, IL for a Director, Physician Practice Sections.  As our Director, Physician Practice Sections you are responsible for the long-term success of the Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS) and the Integrated Physician Practice Section (IPPS), the AMA’s primary policy-making and leadership development vehicles for engaging hospital medical staff leaders (OMSS) and leaders of integrated group practices (IPPS).  The Director oversees Section planning and governance functions, plans and directs the activities of the Sections, and serves as a center of expertise on hospital medical staff, integrated group practice, and other practice issues, and is the point of contact for internal and external inquiries related to physician-hospital/group relations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Relationship Management and Development 

  • Guides the Section Governing Councils in the development and implementation of strategic plans aligned with department and AMA goals.
  • Builds, manages, and sustains professional relationships with Governing Council members and other Section leaders. Provides strategic counsel to Section leaders, advising them on and guiding them through relevant AMA policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Identifies and facilitates implementation of leadership development opportunities for Section leaders.
  • Represents the needs of the Sections to management, elevating concerns as appropriate.

Section Activities

  • Directs AMA staff and Section leaders in the planning and execution of Governing Council meetings, Annual/Interim meetings, and other Section events.
  • Directs the Section policy-making process – from concept to policy.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) and primary point of contact within and outside the AMA for inquiries from or related to hospital medical staffs, integrated groups, and other practice matters. Collaborates with product experts to identify product and service gaps and to fulfill those needs and opportunities.
  • Interacts with the AMA Board of Trustees, Joint Commission representatives and other AMA business units, and relevant external organizations.
  • Facilitates two-way communication between the AMA and Section members, and between Section leaders and their constituents.
  • Assists with the development of customer profiles and guidelines for segment messaging, test and implement programs and engagement opportunities.
  • Identifies and contributes to the implementation of opportunities to grow AMA membership.

Staff Management Oversight

  • Sources and select, develop and coach, reward and recognize, and optimize talent of all AMA employees assigned to the section.
  • Leads Sections to ensure collaboration and productive outcomes with other AMA business units.
  • Ensures proactive communication with all internal and external clients as well as AMA employees to ensure positive collaboration.
  • Manages budget and salary plans within guidelines.

May include other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in relevant discipline required. Knowledge of hospital/group practice governance and practice models preferred.
  2. Minimum 7 years of proven leadership experience in leading, influencing and interacting with external stakeholders required.  Experience with physician leaders preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and coach mentor staff required.  Managing remote teams preferred.
  4. Strong leadership, strategic planning, analytical, diplomacy, and conceptual thinking skills required.
  5. Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write a diverse range of material including hospital medical staff issues, develop well thought-out policy positions, and edit material prepared by others.
  6. Excellent organization, prioritization, and management skills to handle a variety of multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced, high-volume team environment, required.
  7. Polished interpersonal, decision-making, and political skills to interface and communicate with all levels of leadership, staff and management, and build sustainable, trusting relationships with members.
  8. Strong leadership, planning, analytical, diplomacy, and conceptual skills.
  9. Travel and extended hours, nights, and weekends as business demands dictate, required.
