Position Overview
Daily Harvest is looking for a Director of Engineering to join our Engineering team. The Engineering team focuses on architecting, developing, and delivering highly scalable and innovative software that meets the needs of the Daily Harvest business and our customers.
The Director of Engineering, Services will oversee our platform teams that enable us to take care of food. As the engineering leader for this team, you’ll be leading several of our talented development squads to ship the code that powers our entire business — from robust microservices, to code that interfaces with our shipping providers, to inventory and operations management at scale. You’ll be joining a team of talented and highly motivated engineers who enjoy working together.
What you’ll do:
- Rapidly scale and lead our services engineering team, with a focus on consistency, quality, velocity, and experimentation (overseeing a team of 8-10 lead and senior engineers)
- Define and and maintain technology standards and software development practices that can adapt to the needs of the business
- Oversee the design, estimate and implement new and refactored software services on the platform securely, reliably and at scale. Ensure the quality of design and implementation of software components
- Work closely with product and engineering leadership to own the technical strategy and ownership of projects with major company impact.
- Work with internal tech teams to identify and build platform elements required to support key product features
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with product owners, and other members of the digital product team to develop best-of-breed digital experience that meet the needs of our users and drive our business objectives.
- Provide guidance and mentoring members of the engineering team, including senior individual contributors and managers
- Identify and execute on opportunities to improve the software development lifecycle and processes
- Scale by delegating effectively; ensures tasks are completed as specified without micromanaging
- Make independent decisions for the team
- Contributes to the career development of others; meeting regularly with direct reports, provide frequent feedback on their work, help individuals set goals to ensure employee growth and retention goals
Who you are:
- You are excited about building and leading exceptional engineering teams
- 8+ years of professional experience with software development
- 3+ years of experience managing a team of at least 4 engineers
- Experience in back-end architecture and development
- Familiarity working with modern cloud based microservice architectures
- Strong continuous integration and continuous delivery experience
- Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and services at scale
- Well-versed in modern cloud platforms, like AWS, and their associated technologies
- Experience with Agile software development and JIRA
- Experience transitioning monolithic systems to microservice-based systems is a plus
- 5+ yrs experience with Python preferred but not required
- Bonus points if you have experience leading the implementation of a secure and compliant platform
