The Role

We seek a dynamic, personable, and experienced Director of Development to lead our fundraising efforts and team. The Head of Development will work closely with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team and execute our fundraising strategy in the U.S. and internationally. They will lead a team that continues to grow the annual income of CCDH, which has increased over the last five years to $7,000,000 in 2024.

The ideal candidate will have experience leading a development team for an ideas-led non-profit that has strong portfolios in research, policy and communications. They will be organized, driven, creative, and able to develop funding opportunities and relationships strategically in an international context.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Strategic Fundraising Leadership

  • Collaborate with CEO, Board, and team to lead the fundraising strategy for CCDH, contributing innovative ideas and best practices to drive fundraising goals, and crafting organizational narratives to optimize income opportunities
  • Execute fundraising strategy by overseeing the fundraising lifecycle across our international pipeline, managing up to CEO and other team members to drive goals
  • Track and report progress using specific metrics in Salesforce, communicating results regularly to CCDH leadership, presenting analyses of progress towards goals and KPIs
  • Delivering results in a sustained way and layer fundraising activities onto existing departmental activities – e.g., report launches and policy engagements

Donor Cultivation and Relationship Management

  • Develop the funder value proposition for CCDH, including solicitations for core support across multiple sectors and geographies.
  • Work with other teams to ensure the value proposition is integrated, where appropriate, into other comms materials.
  • Strengthen our existing donor relationships and build out new major opportunities from foundations, organizations, corporations and individuals
  • Research and map- out prospective funders using CCDH’s networks and tools like Candid, personalizing outreach to match donor motivation(s)
  • Strategic Planning & Implementation: You’ll work with your team to manage the lifecycle of grants and increase revenue through individual donations, major gifts, institutional grants
  • Support and optimize the CEO (frontline fundraiser for the org), Board members, and influencers in the sector to generate efficient momentum to drive fundraising goals
  • Support CEO with relationship management and drive new funder engagement for ultra-high net worth individuals and large institutions, optimizing the CEO’s time
  • Securing new meaningful partnerships that align with the organization’s core values and scope of work

Event Planning and Stewardship

  • Spearhead the planning, execution, and evaluation of stewardship and cultivation events to achieve revenue goals
  • Oversee processes for effective donor recognition, impact reporting, and personalized donor engagement, online and offline
  • Support the CEO with stewardship and relationship management, optimizing his time and resources

Operational and Team Leadership

  • Leading the Development team at CCDH: overseeing performance, professional development, and well-being of an international team
  • Support team members in planning and executing fundraising deliverables for CCDH, including research, grant writing, donor cultivation and engagement, messaging, etc.
  • Lead your team in supporting the CEO with fundraising pitch decks, messaging, drafting emails, donor communications, grant reporting, etc.
  • Collaborating with the finance team on budgets and reporting requirements

Person Specification

Essential

  • Highly strategic and relational, with technical fundraising experience and 10+ years of experience as a fundraiser for national nonprofits, leading the completion of 6- and 7-figure gifts
  • Have a track record of meeting and exceeding large revenue goals, including building 6- and 7-figure partnerships
  • Previous experience in leading and building a team
  • Proven success in creating and growing major gifts fundraising programs, including but not limited to foundations, high net worth individuals, DAFs and other major donor constituencies
  • Team player, working across organizational departments to craft donor collateral and align funder expectations, helping create an awareness and culture of philanthropy across the organization
  • Exceptional writer and communicator, highly experienced in drafting, editing and supervising major bids, concept notes, proposals and other donor collateral
  • Highly experienced in all aspects of donor stewardship, recognition and impact reporting
  • Nimble and proactive networker among philanthropy influencers, connectors and sector leaders; adept at generating new introductions and opportunities for partnership
  • Demonstrable strong understanding of and ability to engage meaningfully with organizational themes and priorities and our theory of change
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, capable of working autonomously and proactively in a fast paced environment
  • Familiarity with accounting practices and non-profit finance literacy
  • A high-level thinker and strategist, who can also create and implement a plan through the most minor details
  • Strong skills in CRM development, preferably Salesforce, as well as wider digital literacy

Desirable

  • Experience fundraising for any of our core issue areas, including tech accountability, identity-based hate, climate change denial and countering disinformation
  • Expertise in running small gift programs
  • Understanding of MEL frameworks and systems to communicate impact to funders
  • Experience or knowledge of the UK/EU fundraising landscape
