Cary is looking for a Digital Marketing Specialist to join us as we redefine local government marketing. This role sits at the intersection of marketing, communications, and technology and uses measurable successes to push the team to higher levels of achievement. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with the ability to motivate others to evolve with the needs of our citizens, government, and organization.
The Digital Marketing Specialist develops, implements, documents, and monitors a digital media strategy that conveys Cary’s values, communicates key messages, promotes major events and initiatives, and brings brand awareness to a national audience.
Working under the supervision and guidance of the Marketing Communications Supervisor, this role serves as a technical and subject matter expert for Cary’s various marketing and communications channels, including the town’s website and web properties, email marketing efforts, social media platforms, and digital communications tools, all while providing guidance in best practices and standards for content and user experience.
Typical Tasks
DIGITAL MEDIA STRATEGY
Develop, implement, document, and continuously evolve the digital media strategy for Cary based on team and organizational goals;
DIGITAL CONTENT PUBLICATION
Gather, write, edit, review, approve, schedule, and publish content across communications channels including websites, SMS, social media, and marketing emails; establish and evangelize standards and best practices in digital content publication;
DIGITAL MEDIA ANALYSIS
Analyze the effectiveness of digital media and general marketing efforts by setting goals, identifying key metrics, conducting tests, and analyzing outcomes; evolve the digital media strategy based on learnings;
CONTENT CURATION
Research, create, gather, and publish or share content that is of interest or value to a target audience as part of inbound and outbound marketing efforts;
COLLABORATION
Work collaboratively with Marketing team members, interdepartmental staff groups, contractors, and partner agencies to provide strategic guidance, uphold digital media standards, and generate and publish digital content.
CONTENT AND ASSET MANAGEMENT
Collaboratively organize and locate assets such as documents, graphics, images, and video, within a content management system;
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS PLANS
Research, develop, execute, and evaluate clear and thorough plans; collaborate in cross-functional teams to assist staff, independent contractors, and external marketing consultants with plans;
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Actively seek out opportunities to learn or expand skillset and gain knowledge; stay abreast of current trends and technology in the marketing industry;
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- DIGITAL MARKETING STRATEGY
- An expert understanding of best practices in web writing, email marketing, and social media as they apply to the organization’s goals and objectives;
- PUBLIC SPEAKING AND VERBAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS
- An expert ability to clearly and confidently express a concept to a group or individual through spoken word; compose an organized and informative presentation;
- WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
- An expert ability to clearly express a concept through written word in the brand voice and with grammatical accuracy; consistently utilize correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation and adhere to Town of Cary writing style guides; edit and proofread;
- MARKETING STRATEGY
- An expert understanding of the different ways our organization can convey value, communicate key messages, and generate brand awareness for/to a target audience; ability to identify and implement appropriate strategies to reach long-term goals and objectives;
- VISUAL MARKETING
- A solid ability to select quality graphics, photos, and videos and review for brand accuracy; provide feedback on graphics, photos, and videos;
- MROI ANALYSIS
- A basic understanding of marketing return on investment and how it relates to communications planning and marketing strategy;
- MEDIA RELATIONS
- A basic understanding of how to interact with the media for the purpose of informing the public of a Cary’s mission, policies, and practices in a positive, consistent, and credible manner;
- Passion to work in an innovative and dynamic environment, handling a varying of duties, situations, and changes with an adaptive mindset;
- Ability to recognize, research, analyze, and solve problems independently;
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment;
- Experience in managing enterprise marketing and communications tools for email marketing, social media, and /or website content management;
- Strong skills in writing, proofreading, and editing content specific to varying marketing needs.
BONUS SKILLS:
- Experience with or knowledge of Salesforce, Salesforce Service Cloud, Salesforce Marketing Cloud;
- A working knowledge of AP style and its concepts;
- Experience with graphic design, digital asset management, photography, video editing, or other marketing skills.
- A solid understanding of public records laws in North Carolina (NC Public Records Act and Cary’s Public Records Policies) and how they pertain to the work of the Marketing team
- Knowledge of Cary’s objectives, culture, policies, programs, services, events, and facilities;
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or other related field and a minimum of five years’ experience working in a professional or freelance setting.
Candidates should submit a portfolio of two or three short writing samples demonstrating a firm grasp of syntax and grammar; close attention to detail; and a concise voice with a clear call-to-action. Include a short summary for each sample describing the medium for which the sample was developed (e.g. magazine, television, newspaper, Internet) the forum for which it was intended (e.g. stockholders annual report, documentary, employee newsletter), and a description of the target audience(s).
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- A thorough knowledge of the Internet and its use as a marketing tool
- Demonstrated versatility communicating across digital marketing channels
- A positive attitude and the confidence to take risks!
Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
