For centuries, our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail across our military history including both World Wars. The British Forces Post Office is dedicated to providing postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces and is a renowned brand across Defence. Approximately 260 dedicated, hard-working civilian and military staff work collaboratively to deliver both personal and official mail to over 650 locations across the globe; keeping our armed forces connected through free letter and parcel services that play a vital role in sustaining the morale of our Armed Forces.
The majority of our mixed civilian and military staff are based at our purpose-built headquarters at RAF Northolt in Ruislip, North West London, although we have several sites. We form an integral part of Defence Equipment and Support as part of the Land Domain.
Responsibilities
Working within BFPO we are looking for dynamic, self-motivated, hard-working and organised individuals who can work in a customer-focused environment and to tight timescales, while remaining positive and focused on delivery.
Our Mail Operators ensure that the armed forces mail is handled in a secure, safe and timely fashion. You will be responsible for ensuring the correct receipting, sorting and dispatch of all types of mail in a secure, logical and methodical manner. Part of your role will be to follow standard BFPO mail screening policies, including managing irregularities such as damaged, broken, loose or otherwise different items; including prohibited and restricted mail items.
Key Responsibilities will be:
• Maintaining procedures in accordance with BFPO, DCS, Royal Mail Group, FCDO and other relevant mail services.
• Audit, record and maintain accurate accounts documentation for Forces Post Offices counter services worldwide.
• Operation of the beaumer packet and parcel sorting machine.
• Undertaking mail security screening procedures and X-Ray machine operations.
• Creation and maintenance of dispatching schedules with provision of correct consignment and regulatory documentation.
• Carry out road service schedules ensuring timely delivery of mail, carrying out courier duties in accordance with standing orders and security regulations.
• Accurate and secure redirection, location, trace and personal verification duties.
• Day to day, you will carry out basic operating procedures on an automated sorting machine including basic routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment.
Please note the following:
* Our BFPO headquarters is conveniently accessible from the M40 motorway, the A40 and London underground tube stations. In addition to the agreed salary, the post also offers the BFPO Northolt recruitment and retention total allowance of £3,250 pa.
* There may be an option for conversion to permanent basis, depending on the business need and candidate’s ability to gain & retain appropriate aviation security screening qualification (current BFPO policy states a new staff member must complete the security training, pass the NXCT and then retain it 12 months later before conversion to permanent can be applied)
* As a Mail Operator, you will be required to work 7.4 hours per day between 06:00 – 18:00 hours, Monday to Friday, though some additional hours or flexible working will be expected to meet road service schedule. The exact duty timings will be discussed at interview.
What you will be assessed against
• Hold 5 GCSE’s A-C or equivalent relevant experience (evidence to be presented at interview).
• General knowledge of IT Systems as well as the ability to train and operate one or more of the various workplace IT systems such as Postal and Courier Electronic Records and Cenloc for the receipt, despatching or redirection of all mail types.
• The role will require the use of manual handling equipment, as applicants will be required to lift mail items up to 11kg unaided and 30kg assisted with the ability to collaborate to move heavier items.
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• X Ray Screening experience.
• Previous experience of working in a warehouse or mail operation environment.
• Civil Aviation Authority or Air Cargo Security qualification.
• Full Driver’s Licence.

About your team
The Integrated Logistics (iLog) Function is the integrating Function for Support within DE&S, responsible for the development, management and delivery of in-service support for our front-line command customers. The iLog Function consists of around 2,900 personnel, both civil servants and military, and with a wide range of disciplines ranging from operations management and supply chain management, technical through-life support and logistics delivery, to modelling and analysis and internal continuous improvement consultancy services.
