Full-Time Dean, School of Trades and Transportation

Nova Scotia Community College – Posted by Nikki Berrigan Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Job Description

Dean, School of Trades and Transportation

We are looking for a Dean, School of Trades & Transportation.  Based in Halifax, you will build provincial partnerships with sector-based employers to ensure our programming meets industry needs and provides students with the most innovative, challenging, and applied education you can get in Nova Scotia and beyond. You will lead the development of the programming mix in the School which includes certificates, diplomas, continuing education, apprenticeship, and customized training; and you will ensure this programming keeps current and progressive in these dynamic fields. You will accomplish all of this by working collaboratively with internal, community and government partners, including the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, in a way that supports the College’s strategic plan and priorities.

We are Nova Scotia Community College. Our mission is to help “build Nova Scotia’s economy and quality of life through education and innovation.” We offer over 140 advanced skill programs in five academic schools, serving the entire province through a network of 13 campuses, 3 learning centres and a vibrant eCampus. Eighty-eight percent of our graduates are employed, most in their field of study; 94% have chosen to live and work in Nova Scotia.

In the School of Trades and Transportation, learners prepare for careers in the fields of building trades, manufacturing, marine, aviation and automotive. All of our programs are designed to meet and exceed national occupational standards and may be accredited by national accrediting agencies. Given the provincial skilled trades shortage, this is an exciting time for the school in working with partners to bring innovative approaches to increasing recruitment, retention, and diversity while accelerating pathways to employment.

You hold a graduate degree, or equivalent sum of relevant education and experience, and you have at least ten years of relevant occupational experience in one or more of the sectors within the School and/or within a post-secondary environment specializing in one or more of these sectors.

You have recent experience in a senior leadership role within a complex organization leading a large, high-functioning team with the ability to work effectively and build strong relationships within a complex, matrix-based organization, demonstrating comfort with ambiguity.  Known for your ability to forge powerful partnerships, you have demonstrated the ability to lead large initiatives; working with educational, community, government, and industry leaders. You are able to influence, facilitate, negotiate, and manage multiple stakeholders with various and sometimes conflicting interests to achieve a cohesive approach to program quality that meets organizational objectives and industry needs. You are a creative and action-oriented leader with an equity mindset who demonstrates a passion for education and an unstoppable commitment to learning and innovation. This allows you to inspire teams to do great things.

Nova Scotia Community College recognizes the positive impact of flexible working arrangements. You can review our FlexWork Policy at https://www.nscc.ca/about/publications/policies-procedures/policies/flexwork-policy.asp.
