The School of Science and Health Sciences (SHS) is home to Hawkeye Community College’s Liberal Arts science courses as well as more than ten health programs including but not limited to; Dental Hygiene, Nursing and EMS among others. As Dean of the SHS, you will lead and manage a dynamic department of educators as we plan to move into a newly remodeled multi-million-dollar state of the art facility which will house a 10-thousand-square foot simulation lab as well as multiple labs for hands-on, interactive learning.

Essential Job Functions
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Responsible for operation of the School of Science and Health Sciences (SHS).
- Provides academic and administrative leadership while initiating, leading, and finalizing the hiring process for faculty and staff in the School of SHS.
- Establishes a cohesive team environment.
- Evaluates, supervises and manages personnel within EEOC guidelines and collective bargaining contracts where applicable.
- Determines faculty and staff schedules.
- Provides oversight and support in the SHS School and the institution’s strategic plan, budget, and policy direction.
- Enhances the School and College profile, resource streams, and engagement with alumni and the community.
- Serves on College committees and task forces.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with members and employers of the community.
- Actively participates and supports public and community health initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Accreditation Responsibilities
- Is familiar with accreditation requirements for all programs that have governing bodies or required accreditation under the Dean’s direction.
- Provides support to program chairs when completing required accreditation process reports.
- Provides support to the college’s accreditation liaison when required for the Iowa Department of Education, NACEP and the Higher Learning Commission.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a science or healthcare discipline, education, administration, or closely related field
- Three years of administrative experience in a post-secondary educational or healthcare setting.
- Three years teaching experience in a postsecondary Health and/or Science program.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of accreditation in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of the team of Academic Deans.
- Demonstrated proficient skills in program development, planning, and curricular and budget management.
- Demonstrated effective oral, written, and digital communication skills to positively interact with students, faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations (students, faculty, staff, community) with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion while contributing to an inclusive learning and working environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of community college philosophy, program accessibility, and alternative and advanced technological educational delivery systems.
Working Conditions
Anticipated schedule is Monday – Friday with flexible hours including nights and weekends.
Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Work is performed in an office setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours. During course of day, interact with student, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computers.
Employment Status
Full time exempt position with comprehensive or competitive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expenses; holiday, personal, sick, and vacation leave; tuition reimbursement; and a choice of retirement programs—IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution).
Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience.
