Full-Time Data Engineer

Kessel Run – Posted by Kessel Run Anywhere

Job Description

This role is for a Data Engineer in the Wing Command and Control (Wing C2) Data team at Kessel Run.

Our Software Engineers are breaking new ground within the Air Force, changing the way the Department of Defense builds software. We build, measure, and learn; creating war-winning software iteratively. No longer are we building off of multi-year plans with stacks of requirements. As a software engineer on the Wing Command and Control (Wing C2) Data team, you will develop data applications to support, inform and execute the future air tasking order during agile combat employment

Engineers at Kessel Run balance user needs, organizational outcomes, and technical feasibility in order to build value quickly while still considering the big picture. Our teams are flat and balanced, with Developers, Designers, and Product Managers working in concert, empowered to build the software we know our warfighters need.

Day In The Life

A typical day as a Kessel Run Software Engineer starts with your caffeinated beverage of choice and a team stand-up to align on goals for the day. As an engineer you will pair program regularly and use Test-Driven Development to implement user stories from the product’s backlog.

You will help Product Managers write stories by providing input on technical complexity and feasibility. You will be empowered to learn continuously. You will work closely with your PM and Designer in a balanced team to define product direction. You will help enable junior engineers to grow. You will provide input on architecture decisions and help ensure code quality.

Who You Are

  • You are proficient writing Java or Kotlin, and Javascript
  • You are proficient with frontend and backend development (Spring and/or React.js frameworks)
  • You enjoy paired programming and working on a balanced team
  • You have experience with TDD and automated testing
  • You have experience with building continuous delivery and continuous integration pipelines (GitLab, Jenkins, etc)
  • You have experience with deploying dockerized application to production environments (kubernetes/helm)
  • You have experience with building applications that communicate through a pub/sub model (i.e. Kafka)
  • You keep up with best practices and spread that knowledge to others
  • You are comfortable working in a UNIX terminal
  • You have experience deploying applications in a containerized environment
  • You are experienced and comfortable with SQL databases (Postgres or MySQL)
  • You can develop empathy with your users
  • You have at least 3 years of experience applying the listed skillsets
  • You are a U.S. citizen and are eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here)

This is a Federal civilian service position within the United States Air Force. We are hiring at the equivalent of a GS-13 up to GS-14 level for this position. This means you can expect a base salary of $79,468 to $122,077 multiplied by your locality rate, based on your experience. You can find your locality definition here and see the pay tables for the GS scale here. Our headquarters is located in Boston, MA; for a Boston-based employee, this would translate to a range from $102,601 to $157,614

We also provide paid time off, health, and retirement benefits. There are advancement opportunities to promote to more senior levels after hiring.

We understand that there is no such thing as the ideal candidate for any job and we believe in empowering people to learn and grow throughout their careers. We encourage any applicant who is interested in making an impact in the Department of Defense to apply to this position regardless of background and qualifications.
