Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Data Analyst supports and implements college data collection and analysis to grow a data-centered culture on campus. This includes routine data requests as well as data for institutional effectiveness, governance, and strategic planning. This position works closely with faculty and staff to define and develop new data tools, with a focus on Tableau Data Dashboards.

The Data Analyst will be part of the Title III Guiding Team and work both independently and as part of a team serving a diverse community of users. The position will also provide analytic support and consultative services to foster a culture of evidence and inquiry throughout the College. This is an administrative position that reports to the executive director of institutional research and grant development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Write, debug, and validate queries to extract data from the college data systems, the SBCTC data warehouse databases, and other national databases (e.g., Census data) to create, format, and clean datasets for analysis; some projects may require acquiring and integrating data from numerous complex data systems, as well as data that has yet to be collected or committed to digital form. This includes but is not limited to, the use of business intelligence solutions such as Tableau.

• Assist in designing and conducting research that supports college decision-making related to student success, with a focus on equity-centered grant activities under Title III. Other research areas may include planning, accreditation, program assessment, community characteristics, recruitment, program development, or other research and evaluation activities using standard data analysis tools such as Excel, Tableau, SQL Server tools, and SPSS.

• Produce tables, graphs, dashboards, and narrative analyses of data to easily display, summarize, and communicate student success scenarios, e.g., retention, enrollment, graduation, etc.; develop and maintain a meaningful set of standard reports for internal and external audiences.

• Maintain the data request system; evaluate, prioritize, and respond to ad hoc requests from administrators, faculty, staff, and outside entities.

• Compile data and information from across the college to ensure accurate and timely submission of reports and surveys to external agencies, e.g., IPEDS, ACT, SBCTC, etc.

• Participate as directed on committees and workgroups that require data or accountability measures.

• Serve as a resource for research methodology, evaluation design, and other data-related topics by providing consultation, training, and other technical assistance as requested; take the initiative to further the understanding of data, data limitations, and appropriate uses of institutional data.

• Work collaboratively with the college community to address research needs.

• Design and deliver professional development opportunities for the campus on that build the capacity of the institution to increase the use and understanding of data (e.g. the collection, understanding, application, and use of data and data products).

• Follow legal and ethical guidelines in conducting research and analyses, e.g., FERPA, human subjects protection.

• Actively engage in appropriate self-directed and institution-determined professional development opportunities and demonstrate acquired learning in work products; maintain current knowledge of relevant bodies of research literature.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Policy Studies, Public Administration, Organizational Development, Education, or related field from an accredited institution or an equivalent mix of education and experience.

• Minimum two years recent research experience, including independently leading research projects, with focus on research design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation required; graduate research experience may substitute for professional experience.

• Knowledge of research and evaluation, statistics, policy analysis, and other research-oriented disciplines; ability to read and interpret policies, regulations, and laws as they relate to the above functions.

• Demonstrated proficiency in data visualization techniques from complex data sources

• Familiarity or experience in SQL or demonstrated interested in learning SQL

• If selected for an interview, a skills assessment may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree or higher

• Expertise in Tableau, SPSS or similar

• Proficiency in SQL

• Experience supporting grant work

• Demonstrated experience in technical writing

• Knowledge of Washington State community/technical college data processing, Tableau or other dashboard software

Compensation & Work Schedule Salary is $6,458 per month. This is a full-time(40 hours per week), temporary position lasting 2 years. If funding is available, the position can be extended.
