Assistant Teaching Professor of Stage Management and Design/Technology

Ball State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance seeks a colleague to join our vibrant community. The contract faculty member will plan an active and vital role in our innovative and collaborative programs in both stage management and design/tech where the faculty and staff foster the development of compassionate, inclusive, and empathetic artists and human beings.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in inclusive approaches in the area of theatre with specific attention to the training of designers and stage managers. Teaching practices should align with the mission and strategic plans of the university, college, and department.

The Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance is growing and changing. We offer eight diverse curricular options that develop and nurture each student’s creativity, curiosity, and collaborative skills. We inspire our students to be thinkers, responsible citizens, and motivated artists who will make a difference in creating the next generation’s voice.

 

The department is a BFA/BA/BS undergraduate-only program with over 425 theatre majors, 75 dance majors and 45 full-time faculty/staff. This includes 70 majors within our BFA/BA/BS Design and Technology program and 40 majors in our Directing and Stage Management tracks. The new BFA in Design and Technology includes a STEM designation, while our BA/BS in Stage Management is one of the only such undergraduate programs in the country. The Department plays an active role in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) and with the American College Dance Association (ACDA).

Ball State is accredited by both the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

 

Our undergraduate only program, low student-to-faculty ratio, hands-on advising and mentoring from a faculty of working professionals, and distinguished guest artists allow for the personal development of each student as both an individual and an artist.

 

As a faculty member at Ball State University, you will have access to robust programming and institutional resources that help faculty develop as teachers, creative artists, and scholars, including new faculty academies and communities of practice, development opportunities through the Division of Online and Strategic Learning, and the University’s Aspire internal granting program.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: Teaching load will include a variety of courses in in a highly competitive BA/BS/BFA undergraduate theatre programs within the stage management and design/technology disciplines. Courses may include all levels of stage management and all levels of design/technology within the candidate’s primary and/or secondary areas of expertise (lighting, sound, projections, costume, scenic, makeup and hair, technical direction). The ability to teach additional courses such as Introduction to Theatre, Branding and Marketing for the Theatre and Dance Artist, or Design Awareness is also highly desirable.

 

The ideal candidate will have an interest and ability to work within the Department’s active Production Season. This includes creative assignments as both a stage manager and/or designer, mentorship opportunities for undergraduate students working within the production season, and assisting the Department’s professional staff members in the areas of both design/technology and stage management is also a possibility based on need and applicability.

 

As a faculty member in the College of Fine Arts, they are expected to be a quality teacher, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, and engaged in public service activities, contributing to the Ball State and Muncie communities, and beyond.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience working professionally as a stage manager, artist, designer, technician or arts administrator. One year of part-time or full-time teaching experience at the university/college level, gained concurrently or at any time.

 

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

 

Preferred Qualifications: M.F.A. in Stage Management or Design/Technology (completed by August 2021). Past or current status as a Member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA), United Scenic Artists (USA), or the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). Three years of teaching experience at the university/college level, gained concurrently or at any time. Experience designing and/or creating content for projections in educational or professional venues. Significant connections and recognitions within the professional stage management or design/technology industry. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to work collegially within a liberal-arts setting.
