SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
***This position will teach in Summer Quarter 2023. The first day of the quarter is Wednesday, July 5. The final day of the quarter is Tuesday, August 29. There are no classes on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.***

Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech), located 15 miles northeast of Seattle, is the only public institute of technology in Washington state and has provided high quality education since 1949. LWTech offers 10 applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 35 associate degrees and 86 professional certificates. The college focuses on preparing students for a wide variety of careers in fields including IT, healthcare, manufacturing, engineering, transportation, design, education, as well as transfer to universities. The college is seeking a qualified adjunct professor of chemistry. The following is the course outline to which they will teach.

CHEM&131 Introduction to Organic/Biochemistry
Total Hours: 60 Theory (Lecture) Hours: 40 Guided Practice (Lab or Clinical) Hours: 20
This course provides a survey of major functional classes of compounds in organic and biochemistry. Topics include structure, properties, and key metabolic reactions of the major organic and biological molecules of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Includes laboratory.
Prerequisites: CHEM& 121
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

• Examine the relationship between organic and biochemistry and living systems including the role of chemistry in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cellular physiology, metabolism, and health
• Classify organic chemistry and understand the role of carbon and nitrogen in organic chemistry and biochemistry, including the carbon and nitrogen cycles
• Distinguish between the different classes of organic compounds (including alkanes, alenes, alkynes, aromatics, alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and amides) and be able to assign a simple compound to the correct class
• Identify basic functional groups and understand how each group affects the chemical and physical properties of the molecule
• Determine the name and structure of organic compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, esters, ketones, aldehydes and amides
• Contrast organic molecules and their structural and geometric isomers and the concept of chirality
• Apply acid/base and redox chemistry to living systems
• Contrast aerobic metabolism against anaerobic metabolism
• Generalize the application of nuclear chemistry in allied health occupations and environmental issues
• Interpret the environmental impact of hydrocarbons on the environment
• Identify the four organic chemistry groups: proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids
• Describe the general function of enzymes and how the shape of substrates affects them, including toxins
• Apply general chemistry principles to basic mechanisms of common dental and medical drugs
• Examine organic molecules and the role they play in energy release and metabolism based on bond types, structure, and function
• Identify the effect of organic molecules in the environment and within living systems

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Teach to the learning outcomes of the approved curriculum
• Plan and develop a variety of instruction objectives and experiences appropriate to the program goals
• Design learning experiences for the unique characteristics of individual adult students through classes, individual instruction, and self-directed learning
• Identify individual learning needs of students and make appropriate adjustments
• Develop and teach lessons which foster and support equitable student learning and cultural diversity
• Teach productive and constructive study skills to students
• Develop classroom and lab procedures in conformance with identified policies and procedures
• Maintain appropriate records which indicate student progress and meet college requirements
• Post the class syllabus and students’ grades via the online course system (Canvas)
• Follow disciplinary procedures as prescribed and deal consistently and fairly with all students

QUALIFICATIONS

• Masters degree in chemistry or a closely related field
• 2 years teaching experience required; college teaching experience preferred
• Previous experience with an online course system (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Sakai, Moodle) preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must have sensitivity and ability to successfully interact with diverse populations

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Compensation Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. The salary for part time faculty contracts shall be based upon the number of credits assigned the faculty member, the type of class taught, and the rates contained in the part time faculty salary schedule currently in effect and labeled Appendix B.Step A ranges from $675.36 – $2.026.08Step B ranges from $710.74 – $2,132.22Step C ranges from $775.27 – $2,175.93Step D ranges from $795.04 – $2,385.12Step E ranges from $795.04 – $2,385.12BenefitsOnce part-time faculty have worked 50% full-time or more for two consecutive quarters(with LWTech or combined with other community/technical colleges), Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability and other insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board, State Retirement Plan and a Deferred Compensation Plan; sick leave accrues at 1 day (Prorated based on % of FTE) effective upon employment.
