Full-Time Accommodation Specialist

Job Description

Clark College is currently accepting applications for a full-time, exempt Accommodation Specialist position to join the Disability Support Services (DSS) department. Under general guidance, this position supports students’ access to accommodations. This position intakes and analyzes disability documentation, assessments, reports, and other relevant information to determine eligibility for appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations. This position works directly with students on a daily basis, and provides frequent consultation and training to faculty/staff. Determinations regarding disability documentation is a critical function in this role. The person in this position will need experience working with diverse student populations in the educational setting such as students with disabilities, students of color, LGBTQ+, low-income students, and others. This position will report to the Director of Disability Support Services.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Determine the appropriate accommodation(s) on a case-by-case basis by evaluating and interpreting student disability documentation in conjunction with student’s self-report. This includes tracking determinations, at times consulting with providers, and responding to student’s informal disputes and appeals of determination findings.
• Conducts research into Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) laws and amendments, and Title II and III of ADA regulations and has the authority to make decisions regarding accommodation access issues, determining reasonable and unreasonable accommodations.
• Facilitate daily student meetings for the accommodation determination process and when needed provide some educational planning for disability related considerations and/or referral to campus supports.
• Problem solve with students, staff, faculty, regarding issues associated with accommodations and access. This position is a liaison for students to ensure the college is providing mandated accommodations and resolving conflicts in relation to access in the classroom.
• Assist students with accessing DSS services and processes for using their approved accommodations.
• Train students on how to use the accommodation management system called myDSS, which is the AIM software.
• Develop, track, and coordinate best practices for note taker accommodations.
• Supervise work-study or part time staff that support the DSS team in implementing accommodations, such as note takers in classrooms.
• Lead department outreach to students on academic early warning and support students with academic barriers due to their disability.
• Present and provide information to campus departments as well as community partners, schools, and the public on DSS services.
• Provide leadership and consultation to the DSS staff along with the DSS Director and assist with day-to-day operations of DSS.
• Assist the DSS team with implementation of student accommodations, including at times: alternate format editing, proctoring of accommodated exams, and supporting the front desk.
• Serve rotations between the DSS Director on the campus Behavioral Intervention Team Committee, evaluating safety and risk for students experiencing crisis and/or at-risk behaviors. May serve on other campus committees or workgroups to support student retention, completion, and/or Guided Pathways initiatives.
• Facilitate disability identity groups, depending on department or campus needs, such as the Autism Success Group.
• Partner with DSS Director on departmental Records Retention plans and support the DSS Program Coordinator with implementation of Records Retention plan tasks.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Knowledge of the ADA and reasonable accommodation practices in higher education.
• Ability to work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
• Two (2) years of experience with reading diagnostic documentation and providing direct support to students in a college setting such as advising, case management, or counseling related support.
• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, or comparable software/systems as well as information management systems.
• Professional written communication skills; must be able to effectively communicate with diverse individuals and groups within and outside of the organization; provide effective customer service.
• Ability to solve complex problems or complicated situations with self-direction.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in one of the following areas: Education, Counseling, Social Work, Disability Studies, or other related field.
• Experience serving students with disabilities in the educational setting.
• Knowledge of accessibility principles.

Salary Statement:
$55,119 annually
