VEHICLE MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
Hilltop, Central
Work Year: Traditional 245 work days – AMLG/FMGR/GRND/PROTECH
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 5:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., 12:30 – 9:00 p.m., or 1:30 – 10:00 p.m.
FTE: 1.0
Salary Range: starting at $23.99 per hour + .45 differential for second shift, monthly tool & boot stipend of $69
Essential Functions and Objectives:
The Vehicle Maintenance Technician performs repairs, maintenance and inspections on Denver Public School (DPS) vehicles.
– Performs required annual Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and Colorado Driver’s License inspections on district vehicles and completes necessary paperwork, recording identified defects.
– Inspects Maintenance Tech II vehicle repairs and signs off on CDE forms certifying that vehicle work has been performed according to standards (e.g. CDE DPS).
– Disassembles vehicles for inspection; performs secondary diagnostics; trouble-shoots cause cause of defect and determines needed repairs.
– Performs major repairs that directly involve safety to the public (e.g., brakes steering suspension, drive-train).
– Performs maintenance and repair services on district fleet (e.g., CDE maintenance and annual inspection, defect forms), ensuring completeness, accuracy and proper placement of forms in vehicle.
– Completes daily time reporting and submits to Shop Supervisor ( e.g., vehicle numbers, work order numbers, repair codes).
– Test drives vehicles, and test components and systems, using diagnostic equipment.
– Tracks time worked on each vehicle by type of repair according to Time to Task standards.
– Uses computer diagnostic equipment for diagnosing vehicle problems.
– Operates service truck and makes service calls for district vehicle breakdowns.
-Performs operator pre-tip vehicle inspections by checking condition and availability of safety and emergency equipment in accordance with State of Colorado and Commercial Driver’s License authority.
– Maintains work area by cleaning tables; scrubbing floors; and throwing away or recycling materials (e.g., scrap metal oil).
– Creates safe work environment by monitoring shop areas, examining tools and equipment; and providing employee safety training.
– Participates in random drug and alcohol testing program.
– Determines work sequences of repairs and maintenance activities, based on work priority, and availability of parts.
– Participates in and supports a team work environment by interacting with other technicians and supervisors, and assisting the development of new practices and technology (e.g., computer system requirements). Communicates and coordinates fleet maintenance schedule and concerns with shop supervisor.
– Maintains safety and effective operation of personal and shop tools (e.g., floor jacks, air guns, seal driver) in accordance with guidelines (e.g., safety, instruction manual).
– Records maintenance activities by utilizing computerized system )e.g., FASTER). ensuring maintenance standards are met.
– Coordinates with parts counter clerk to ensure availability of parts needed for repair and maintenance; and checks out parts according to procedures.
– Drives district vehicles (e.g., multi-passenger buses, white fleet, school buses) obeying traffic regulations; driving defensively; reporting any accidents/incidents to the supervisor at the time of occurrence.
– Executes contingency plans during during inclement weather operations.
– Attends meetings (e.g., customer service orientation) to give information or discuss fleet maintenance.
– Communicates (e.g., customer service orientation) with vehicle operators during service calls or refers operator to Shop Supervisor.
– Updates, trains other personnel in, and communicates current knowledge of fleet maintenance practices and technology (e.g., computer system requirements).
– Works to maintains current CDE Inspector certification, and ASE certifications.
– Perform other duties as requested.
Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:
– A current and valid State of Colorado Driver’s License (CDL) is required with Class A and BP2S endorsements (or ability to acquire within 6 months).
– Must meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving district vehicle
– ASE Certification in primary work area required for promotion beyond level twelve (12). Must acquire and maintain ASE Master certification in relevant field of work for school bus, automobile, or collision repair for full advancement.
– Colorado Department of Education (CDE) inspector certification or obtain within six (6) months of date of hire.
– Knowledge of maintenance skills (e.g., welding, machine, electrical and mechanical systems, gasoline and diesel engines, overhaul and rebuild, air and hydraulic brakes, tire repair).
– Knowledge of fleet maintenance software (e.g., Faster) and vehicle diagnostic systems (e.g., On Board Diagnostics (OBD), Mitchell on-demand).
– Knowledge of safety issues and regulations when operating and repairing vehicles.
– Knowledge of Colorado Department of Education (CDE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Fluid Mechanics & Computational Science (FMCS) rules, regulations and requirements.
– Ability to troubleshoot and technical skills for diagnosis and repair.
– Ability to work effectively as team member.
– Ability to multi-task and complete work with frequent interruptions.
– Ability to communicate clearly in English, in both written and oral formats.
– Proficiency with MS Office and other computer software programs.
– Experience in a transportation organization, preferably school bus operations and fleet maintenance.
– Experience operating tow or service truck, desired.
Education Requirements:
– High school diploma or equivalent.
– Technical community college graduate in automotive/truck mechanics (1 yr. program), two (2) years vehicle maintenance experience and
– Demonstrated – initiative in ASE tests (preferably passing) and successfully completing approximately 13 weeks of work with a “journeyman level” maintenance technician (OJT) and
– A full set of tools
and/or
– Four (4) years of vehicle maintenance experience, journeyman level preferred and
– ASE certification in school bus/automotive/heavy truck preferred.
– A full set of tools
and/or
– A combination of education and experience.
