xfruan@everytown.org – Posted by xfruan@everytown.org Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Job Description

Students Demand Action is the largest grassroots, youth-led gun violence prevention initiative with more than 700 groups and active volunteers. As a network within Everytown for Gun Safety, Students Demand Action channels the energy and passion of high school and college-aged students into the fight against gun violence in America. An essential Students Demand Action program is the Summer Leadership Academy.

The Summer Leadership Academy is an opportunity for young adults to empower their high school-aged peers who live in communities disproportionately impacted by gun violence to become activists and organizers. Through a 7-month paid internship with Students Demand Action, college-aged students envision and deliver a week-long program in July focused on the gun violence prevention movement and development of leadership skills.

We are currently seeking interns to begin in February 2024. While no prior experience is required, the strongest candidates will demonstrate a passion for and commitment to gun violence prevention, community advocacy, and/or youth development. This position is remote and requires 15-20 hours weekly from February through August of 2024.

In this role you will receive:

  • Leadership and field organizing training
  • Full access to Students Demand Action/Everytown for Gun Safety resources
  • Mentorship from Everytown staff team members
  • An opportunity to develop your professional skills as an organizer, mentor and leader
  • Experience working in the field to support youth in the Gun Violence Prevention movement

Key projects you’ll complete include:

  • Community Mapping
  • Curriculum Development
  • Participant Recruitment
  • Community Partnership Building
  • Program Facilitation and Evaluation
  • Budget Management

To be successful you should have:

  • Strong writing, communication, and organization skills
  • Ability to complete tasks and communicate clearly while working in a virtual environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • High level of accountability and initiative
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Interest in advocacy, particularly gun violence prevention

Compensation Range:

This is a paid internship. The pay rate for this role starts at $17/hr.

Location:

This is a remote position that requires occasional travel within your local community.

Candidates from all parts of the United States are welcome, however we strongly encourage candidates to apply who will be located in one of the following cities during the Spring semester and throughout the summer months: Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL; Durham, NC; Kansas City, MO; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Washington, D.C.

Proposed Schedule:

Candidates selected for the internship must first complete Students Demand Action’s Thriving in the Field training. The weekend-long course will take place January 12-15, 2024 and will cover everything one needs to know to recruit for, plan, and run a Summer Leadership Academy. Upon completion of the Thriving in the Field candidates will be onboarded as interns with Students Demand Action.

The internship’s formal start date will be February 5, 2024. From February through June interns will primarily work from home, with some in-person exceptions for recruitment/networking purposes (e.g. visiting schools and organizations within their community). Interns will be expected to dedicate 15-20 hours a week to their position during this period.

The week-long Summer Leadership Academy will take place in-person at a location in the local community during the month of July. Interns will be expected to dedicate 6-9 hours toward the hosting/facilitation of their program each day during that week. Following the end of the Summer Leadership Academy interns will return to their remote 15-20 hours a week schedule to complete a program reflection and debrief process.
