Temporary School Crossing Guard

Job Description

The School Crossing Guard is a civilian, seasonal position of the Oshkosh Police Department and is a representative of the City of Oshkosh and the State of Wisconsin. As such, the School Crossing Guard is governed by legal and ethical standards of the highest nature. The School Crossing Guard’s philosophy must be one of dedication to the public service, setting aside personal interests for the common good.

The School Crossing Guard is a member of Patrol Services Bureau, and is under the direct supervision of the Sergeant of Special Operations. The Sergeant or designated Patrol supervisor shall act as a liaison between the Oshkosh Police Department and the crossing guards relative to matters pertaining to work schedules. The Sergeant of Special Operations will provide information to the Chief of Police related to appropriate assigned locations for school crossings and the Administrative Services Captain will inventory and issue uniforms and equipment. The duties of a School Crossing Guard are to safely direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic at school crossings and other related duties as required. This is a seasonal position that is occupied only during the public school year in the City of Oshkosh. The primary responsibility of the School Crossing Guard is the safety of school children crossing the streets and intersections as they proceed to and from school. The Crossing Guard must report to his/her assigned post at a predetermined time before the morning and afternoon school sessions begin and remain on duty until the respective sessions end. The School Crossing Guard will only be paid for sessions worked.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Supervise children crossing streets and intersections at their assigned posts, seeing that the children remain on the sidewalk until it is safe to cross.
• Safely enter the middle of the street or intersection, signaling by handheld stop sign and hand signal for vehicular traffic to stop, allowing the children to cross safely. The Crossing Guard will then return to their post and allow traffic to flow normally.
• Report observed violations of law to their supervisor and may subsequently be required to testify in a court of law as to their observations.
• Assist children as appropriate, while maintaining control of the assigned intersection.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Have no felony convictions.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to arrange for transportation to assignments.
• Availability by telephone.
• Vision correctable to 20/40.
• Ability to hear normal conversation.
• Physical stamina to endure standing for extended periods of time, often under inclement weather conditions.
• Neat appearance and good judgement.
• Ability to deal effectively and courteously with people of all ages.

We are seeking school crossing guards for various intersections throughout town. Not available both mornings AND afternoons? No problem! We can fill this as a job share. Not available every day? That is okay too! Be a substitute and fill in for absences as your schedule permits.

S. Oakwood Rd/Newport Ave- Crossing Times: AM- 7:10-8:10 PM- 2:30-4:00 Early Release- 12:30-1:45

Bowen St/School Ave- Crossing Times: AM- 7:10-8:10 PM- 2:40-3:10 Early Release- 12:30-1:00

W. New York/Elmwood Ave-Crossing Times: AM- 7:05-7:50 PM- 2:40-3:10 Early Release 12:30-1:00

Sawyer/5th- mornings only-Crossing Times: AM- 7:10-8:10
