Job Description
Victim Assistance Program, the leading expert in crisis intervention for victims of crime and trauma in Northeast Ohio, is seeking a part time Akron Municipal Court Intake Advocate to work Monday through Friday from 7:30a.m.- 11:30a.m., in the Akron Municipal Court’s Prosecutor’s office.

The Akron Municipal Court Intake Advocate provides trauma-informed services to victims and family members impacted by crisis, violence, or tragedy by offering immediate crisis intervention and short-term advocacy, via phone, or in person, to address the aftermath of their victimization.
Crisis Intervention
Victims need to feel safe, secure, be able to vent, be validated, predict what’s going to happen next, and be prepared for the future… that is crisis intervention. After an offender is arrested, the confusion of the judicial system begins. You could be the first person to call a victim to say, I’m sorry this happened to you, this is what’s happening, and here is how we can help.
- Provide clients with support (in person via phone, text, or chat) using NOVA’s model of crisis intervention
- Relay empathetic arraignment information to victims whose offenders are arraigned through Akron Municipal Court, including both felony and misdemeanor cases
- Liaison with Akron Municipal Court staff and Akron City Prosecutor’s Office staff to obtain victim contact information
- Provide victims with resources for safety planning and addressing immediate basic needs
Advocacy
Just because our office is in the municipal courthouse, does not mean our knowledge of the court systems ends there. The Advocate Coordinator must help clients navigate through the entire court system – both on the municipal level and the various branches of the County Court of Common Pleas.
- Empower victims to make informed decisions by providing options to meet their individual needs
- Provide education about the judicial process within the Summit County Judicial System
- Educate clients on their rights and the application of applying or waiving their rights as a victim of crime
- Refer clients to outside providers when needs arise
Administrative
If you like the hustle and bustle of nonstop work, look no further! You won’t just be sitting in front of a computer during the day, you will be running around the court house to find time sensitive information from various departments, chatting with collaborating partners to build professional relationships, and yes making lots of phone calls and sending a ton of emails.
- Distribute case/client information to victim advocates assigned to designated Akron Municipal Court courtrooms
- Distribute case/client information to Summit County Prosecutor’s Office Victim Service Grand Jury Advocate for applicable felony cases
REQUIREMENTS
Victim Assistance Program strives to provide all our employees with the right tools for success, we just need you to come with a few things in your toolbox.
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to Victim Assistance Program mission and services
- Pass and clear a state and federal background check

In addition, all employees of Victim Assistance Program are required to respond 24/7/365 to the needs of victims of a Summit County mass casualty which may expose employees to hazardous environments.

To ensure every victim is provided with unbiased support, our agency remains neutral on most social justice issues. We work extremely close with local law enforcement; we are a pro police agency and expect all our employees to strengthen our mission by respecting the work of law enforcement in our community.
