Job Description

Providence is calling a Certified Chaplain (Full-Time/Day Shift) to Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital.

We are seeking a Certified Chaplain who will provide professional and competent spiritual care ministry, and be responsible for serving the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of others in inpatient, outpatient and community settings. As a member of the healthcare team, is directly responsible for the implementation of the mission, values, polices, and procedures of the Department of Spiritual Care and the facility in which they serve.

In this position you will:

  • Provide effective spiritual support and appropriate religious/spiritual resources that contribute to the well-being of the care recipients, their families, and caregivers.
  • Provide spiritual care that respects diversity and differences including, but not limited to culture, gender, and sexual orientation and spiritual/religious practices.
  • Triage and manage crises in the practice of spiritual care.
  • Facilitate group processes, such as family meetings, post trauma, caregiver debriefing, and support groups.
  • Formulate and utilize individualized spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes, and care plans in order to contribute effectively to the well-being of the person receiving care, and document this care accurately/effectively in the appropriate records according to professional standards (including electronic medical record) at the point of service.
  • Share in Department coverage to meet the patient care needs.
  • Promote the integration of spiritual care into the life and service of the institution in which one functions.
  • Establish and maintain professional and interdisciplinary relationships, including collaborative relationships with community clergy and faith group leaders
  • Understand and function within the institutional culture and systems, including utilizing business principles and practices appropriate to one’s role in the organization.
  • Promote, facilitate, and support ethical decision-making in one’s workplace.
  • Promote institution and department initiatives.
  • Promote how research literature informs the profession of chaplaincy and one’s spiritual care practice and support research projects as needed.
  • Present formally on spiritual health to the interdisciplinary team, students, or community organizations.
  • Mentor students, including but not limited to CPE students, nursing students, etc.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry or the equivalent applicable education from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certified by one of these Spiritual Care organizations: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)’ or the Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CASC).
  • Endorsed in accordance with the requirements of his/her faith/spiritual tradition
  • Catholic Context: Knowledge of the Religious and Ethical Directives of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
  • Working knowledge of different ethical theories appropriate to one’s professional context.
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Ability to walk and stand for the greater part of the day.
  • Professional behavior and appearance.
  • Incorporate the spiritual and emotional dimensions of human development into one’s practice of care.
  • Ability to utilize primary research and research literature to inform the profession of chaplaincy and one’s spiritual care practice.
  • Working knowledge and function within the institutional culture and systems, including utilizing business principles and practices appropriate to one’s role in the organization.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate public worship/spiritual practices appropriate to diverse settings and needs.
  • Facilitate theological/spiritual reflection for those in one’s care practice.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 4 Units—Accredited or approved by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), by programs that were accredited by the former United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation (USCCB/CCA), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC/ACSS). Equivalency for one unit of CPE (two units in CASC) may be considered.
