We are looking for a talented Chemical Systems Technical Specialist to join our team specializing in Cummins Research & technology for our Component Business Segment in Columbus, IN.
Your impact will happen in these and other ways:
• This applied science position applies chemical principles that create and develop product functionalities which are integrated and sold into Cummins’ products. The position involves the research, design, analysis, testing and failure analysis of chemical based products, including catalyts, substrates,sensors, batteries and fuel cells.
• Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.
• Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.
• Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit.
• Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.
• Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role (see “competencies” below).
• Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.
Experience
Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience (3 plus years) in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. The role of the Electrochemistry Technical Specialist is to enable a high standard towards testing of lithium-ion batteries and support of various internal and customer-oriented projects.
• Provide technical expertise, utilizing detailed knowledge and understanding of electrochemical properties and materials chemistry of Li-ion energy storage cell technology, to provide support and assistance for Customer, R&D and new product introduction projects. Support R&D projects in order to deliver against agreed budget, time and scope parameters.
• Conduct battery forensic analysis to support the battery design, manufacturing improvement and negotiation with suppliers. Substantial work or research in the field of electrochemistry.
• Experience and knowledge in Li-ion battery technology, ideally with experience with Li-ion batteries in automotive industry. Hands-on work attitude is a must.
• Knowledge and understanding of electrochemical properties and materials chemistry, idea from both a commercial and research-based Li-ion energy storage cell technology background. Additional knowledge and experience in battery failure analysis is seen as an asset.
Required Education, Licenses or Certifications Ph.D. or M.S.+3 years of experience or B.S. +4 of Science or equivalent degree in chemistry, materials science and engineering or physical sciences required.
Compensation and Benefits
Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
