Job Summary:
The School Nurse will provide first aid to students on school premises, coordinate routine health assessments and health screenings to mitigate health and safety risks, and collaborate with parents, primary care physicians, and appropriate school personnel to develop student healthcare plans. This position is responsible for helping to develop and implement health and safety policies and procedures in support of the school’s mission and in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Manages and updates all health information and health care at school
- Is responsible for professional, medical treatment of students on school premises, and communicates with parents/guardians in a timely manner regarding medical issues
- Collaborates with co-leaders of the COVID Taskforce in developing and implementing COVID-19 protocols in compliance with state and county health official requirements and recommendations
- Executes COVID-19 protocols when individuals are showing symptoms
- Is responsible for immunization record keeping in Veracross, and reporting immunization data to the state of Washington Health Department
- Monitors and stocks medical, and protective equipment as required
- Assists the Athletics Department with sports physical record keeping
- Is responsible for early detection of physical problems and health evaluations
- Evaluates students or employees with contagious or infectious diseases
- Is responsible for disease prevention and risk mitigation
- Arranges for immunization and other health-related clinics as needed
- Documents student and employee illness and accidents
- Ensures that health-related school policies are followed and updated
- Collaborates with school personnel and others to ensure delivery of training to faculty/staff in the following key areas: CPR/AED/First Aid, Epi-Pen administration, medication administration, blood borne pathogens, and other health related trainings that may be necessary
- Serves as a member of the school’s safety committee
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education & Experience:
- Degree from a professional nursing education program
- Certified as a registered nurse license (RN) from the Washington State Nursing Board
- Certified in the use automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Current First Aid Certification

Experience working in a school
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff
- Ability to work and communicate well with students and their parents
- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Flexibility, maturity, enthusiasm and a sense of humor
- Proficient at working in a Microsoft Windows environment (Windows 7 or higher), using Office (version 2010 or higher), including Outlook; ability to master common automated systems for record keeping, and confidently learn new technology; Experience with school-focused technology is a plus
- Ability to talk on the phone
