Primary Purpose

To support the execution of the company’s diversity and inclusion strategy in conjunction with SDG&E’s Diversity and Inclusion Manager. Promotes the awareness and adoption of a wide range of diversity and inclusion topics, maintains ongoing programs and supports the initiation of new programs to reinforce an inclusive, respectful, and highly engaged culture. Serves as an advisor providing consultation, counseling, and coaching to the management and employees of SDG&E as a diversity and inclusion subject matter expert. Advises on the development, implementation, and management of policies, programs, and activities designed to ensure the success of the corporate-wide business objectives for managing diversity and inclusion. Investigates employee relations concerns and complaints related to Title VII issues. Ensures compliance with Federal and State affirmative action and fair employment laws.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject-matter expert in the area of diversity and inclusion. Provide technical support and expertise in the development and integration of strategies, policies, and programs intended to enhance employee experience and engagement, corporate reputation, customer services and market position.
  • Investigate Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and employee complaints, problems and irregularities. Identify issues and root causes. Write articulate and thorough investigation reports and position statements. Recommend and provide support to implement appropriate remedies and corrective actions. Maintain high levels of discretion and confidentiality of employee information and records.
  • Design and deliver diversity and inclusion training and development programs. Work to ensure diversity is mainstreamed into all other training and development programs. Advise network of employee volunteers.
  • Attends related conferences, meetings and other external programs to learn about new best practices within the diversity and inclusion field, and proposes and implements continuous improvements on company’s diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Review, analyze, and assess the impact of emerging issues and trends, legislation, court decisions, literature, political, and grassroots movements related to diversity, EEO, and Affirmative Action.
  • Assess exposure and risks to the corporation in matters related to diversity, EEO, and Affirmative Action planning. Collaborate with legal department and appropriate senior management to implement strategies to mitigate those risks.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills required to build lasting relationships and drive consensus; evidenced ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, team and senior leadership personnel from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and with diverse personalities; as well as with government representatives, community, regulatory, and/or political leaders and external organizations.
  • Experience planning, designing and delivering programs, events, and implementing best practices related to diversity and inclusion issues in a complex, consensus-driven environment. Broad understanding of a range of diversity related topics and concerns affecting an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to both work autonomously and in a team environment, including inspiring, advising, and motivating a remote network of volunteer employees.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sometimes controversial and adversarial situations with impartiality and tact.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, requiring different competencies and skill sets.
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality of employee information.
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade, motivate, and influence others on highly sensitive and sometimes abstract issues.
  • Ability to effectively use discretion and communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and deliver diversity-related training programs and activities to large audiences.
  • Strong technical proficiency in full Microsoft Office suite and similar applications and the ability to effectively analyze and report on data.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state Affirmative Action and EEO laws is required.
  • Working knowledge of managing department budget, receivables requests, reimbursements.
  • Working knowledge of Sempra Energy businesses and their operations, including the workings of the collective bargaining units.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Professional Human Resources (PHR), Diversity & Inclusion Trainer, Project Management, Public Speaking, and/or Employment Complaint Investigator certification.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management, Public Administration, Behavioral Sciences, Communications, Human Resources, or related fields or equivalent training and experience.
  • 5 years of experience in Diversity Management, Human Resources Management, Project Management or related fields or equivalent training and/or experience.
