Temporary Climate Content Editor, TED Countdown

Job Description

TED is seeking a Climate Content Editor to oversee editorial content for its climate initiative, Countdown. This person will come up with multi-platform content ideas (for ex., explainers, profiles of climate activists, Instagram stories of actions that people can take, Twitter quote cards and infographics about the climate. etc.). They will also work with Countdown partners, influencers, and other internal and external stakeholders to create posts.

This is a freelance role, with hours based on event needs. Full-time hours required in August, September and October 2020, leading up to and during the digital Countdown Event, and from June – Oct 2021 leading up to the Countdown Summit in October 2021; the rest is to be determined.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Generate appealing original climate-related story ideas and come up with creative ways to tell them on TED’s Ideas blog and its social platforms
  • Work with the Countdown Media Director and members of the Audience Development team to produce content that can be shared through media partnerships
  • Work with the Countdown Media Director and members of the Audience Development team to commission posts from the Countdown Writer/Producer, from freelancers and influencers
  • Work with the Countdown Media Director and members of the Audience Development team to manage the publication of posts and oversee the schedule of editorial content
  •  Work with a Countdown Writer/Producer to build posts, write some of the posts and produce a weekly newsletter
  • Identify speakers from the TED community (including TEDx/TED-Ed/TED Fellows) to contribute or participate in content creation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3-6 years in editing and writing, preferably in the climate, environment or science communications spaces, with a proven track record of writing and editing high-quality articles
  • Experience in multi-platform social media content creation.
  • Strong editorial or journalism background
  • Familiarity with a CMS like WordPress
  • Fluency with Google G-Suite products

Desired skills:

  • Solid communication skills
  • Ability to explain ideas and concepts to a mass audience
  • Understanding of editorial content strategy and analytics
  • Passion and knowledge of the climate space and climate education
  • Experience creating content for global audiences
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders
