Full-Time Communications Director

Job Description

Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF or Federation) is America’s largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organization with 52 state/territorial affiliates and more than six million members and supporters, including hunters, anglers, gardeners, birders, hikers, campers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. The Federation’s mission is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in our rapidly changing world through programming focused on conserving wildlife, restoring habitats and waterways, expanding outdoor opportunities, connecting children with nature, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.

To support our mission, we are seeking a Communications Director to join our National Advocacy Center in Washington, DC.  (Due to COVID-19 all employees are working remotely until we make return to work decisions).

In this role you will help lead earned media outreach and communications support for the National Wildlife Federation. Working in partnership with the communications team and under the supervision of the Associate Vice President of Communications, you will actively improve the exposure, reach and impact of our legislative, policy and conservation efforts. You will collaborate closely with the Federation’s affiliates, allies and teams to develop and execute successful communications campaigns to achieve policy, political, conservation and consumer-outreach objectives.

You will support and help lead communication strategies that generate political, opinion-leader, activist, and broad public support for goals set forth in our strategic plan.

Important elements will include:

  • Growing our brand/reputation as a highly impactful, influential, and bipartisan wildlife conservation organization leader, and the “go to” organization on major federal, state, or local issues relating to wildlife, water, and environmental education.
  • Helping design and lead communications campaigns to increase public awareness of the challenges facing wildlife, water, land, and other conservation priorities — and to ensure the we are seen as owning the way toward collaborative, bipartisan solutions.
  • Ensuring the National Wildlife Federation authentically includes and elevates the voices of marginalized groups.
  • Working with the Associate Vice President of Communications to cultivate and develop relationships with key members of the media and influencers to build long-term familiarity with the National Wildlife Federation, its president and CEO, and its experts.
  • Leading the drafting and editing of guest opinion articles, speeches and other content to frame the National Wildlife Federation’s president and CEO as a leader with vision in the conservation community.
  • Collaborate with our regional staff and affiliates to publicly highlight program successes, and advise same on communications strategy and standard methodologies.
  • Building communications awareness and capacity of members of our team.
  • Speaking on the record to members of the media, including pitching stories and ideas.
  • Planning and executing media events, including press conferences and tele-conferences.
  • Staffing senior leaders from the organization during interviews and other events.
  • Drafting talking points, press releases, digital content, and other materials to our communications initiatives and goals.
  • Directing vendors and contractors activities in pursuit of larger campaign or organizational goals.
  • Helping lead and manage, in collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Communications, the National Wildlife Federation’s national communications team.

During normal business operations, there will be local travel/meetings outside the office 2-4 times/month (including 1-2 times/month to the National Wildlife Federation’s headquarters in Reston, Virginia) and occasional overnight travel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an appropriate discipline (English, journalism, public relations, environmental communications or public policy).
  • Six to eight years of dynamically responsible experience in government, political campaigns, public relations, public affairs, or journalism, with a minimum of two years of experience leading staff or projects in an operation that delivered quantifiable results.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, such as for a member of Congress or other public official or in a journalism context, preferred.
  • Experience developing and executing state of the art policy and/or advocacy campaigns utilizing both traditional and digital communications strategies.
  • General knowledge of wildlife, water, environmental education, outdoor recreation/hunting/fishing issues, and climate change.
  • Direct media relationships across print, radio, online, social and television media, nationally and in key regions/states.
  • Superior analytical, writing, verbal and management skills.

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $100,000.
