Title: USDA Forest Service Trails Individual Placement (2 positions)
Start/End Date: July 6th, 2020 – September 11th, 2020
Stipend: $400/week (+Education Award)
Term: 10 weeks
Reports To: USDA Forest Service GMUG Ouray Ranger District
Location: Montrose, CO 81401
Status: 300-hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $1,289.95 after successful completion

Program Overview:
Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ summer intern team by completing trail maintenance for the US Forest Service!
Help advance the mission of the Forest Service by: working in collaboration with communities and partners; deliver world-class science, technology, and land management; providing access to resources and experiences that promote economic, ecological, and social vitality; and connecting people to the land and one another. The recreation program focuses specifically on providing quality recreational opportunities to the public/users. This includes constructing and maintaining recreational facilities such as campgrounds as well as trails, providing opportunities for dispersed recreation, administering and overseeing outfitter and guide permits, working in cooperation with volunteers and partners, and providing public outreach and education. The Ouray Ranger District manages over 340,000 acres of public lands which includes over 700 miles of trails, 10 campgrounds, 2 cabins, and many dispersed camping recreation sites. Uses range from 4 wheel driving, OHV and motorcycle riding, snowmobiling, mountain bike riding, rock and ice climbing to horseback riding, snowshoeing, skiing, and hiking.
The main focus of these internships will be on maintenance of trails within the Ouray Ranger District. Interns may also be asked to help with other duties. Essential functions and responsibilities include:
- Work with supervisor on general trail maintenance and other recreation maintenance needs
- Keep a detailed log of miles maintained and what type of maintenance and/or a log of visitor use data needed, and/or signs needed, maintained, or installed
- Assist with condition assessments of facilities as needed as well as educational/outreach projects
- Training provided:
- Any specific training and/or safety orientations needed to complete projects will be provided such as saw training if the candidate is not currently certified
General Qualifications:
The selected candidate needs to be able to physically accomplish the tasks and be able to follow directions. Some knowledge of natural resource management, trail maintenance, and visitor use management preferred. Cross-cut/chainsaw certification preferred.
The successful applicant must be self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- U.S. Citizenship
- Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
- Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
- A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
- A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
- Driver’s License
- Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age
