Job description
An exciting opportunity for a Surface Ship Naval Architect in the Naval Ship Support Team, helping DE&S deliver safe, capable and available ships for operation by the Royal Navy and other vital services.
This role is responsible for managing Naval Architecture activities supporting the UK Mine counter measure vessels including stability, structures, materials and hydrodynamics. It provides exposure to all RN ships through developing and maintaining a case for vessel certification including stability calculations, managing and conducting a programme of surveys and acceptance of repairs.
The role is responsible for managing improvements to the vessels design and naval architecture vessel margins. This will include opportunities for UK and overseas travel.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for the maintenance of a portfolio of guidance documentation and contribute to the development of Defence standards, policy and knowledge in the naval architecture area. In doing so, you will work with a range of MoD and industry stakeholders providing advice and guidance to the ship operator.
You will work as a part of the MCM Platform team responsible for the management of a member of staff and report to the Platform Chief Engineer for naval architecture activities.
In order to meet the requirement of this opportunity, it is essential that candidates meet these qualifications, experience and skills:
• Bachelor’s Engineering Degree in Naval Architecture or equivalent
• A good knowledge of naval stability and structures
• Experience of inclining experiments
• A good competence (practitioner) in the Paramarine Stability computational tool (or equivalent)
• A knowledge of GRP marine structures including construction and in-service repair techniques
It would be desirable if candidates could demonstrate the following:
• Membership of Professional Institution and CEng status, or working towards it
• Experience or knowledge of Naval ship signatures, shock and vulnerability
