Full-Time Program Associate, Special Education Mediation
Job Description
The New York Peace Institute Program Associate will be responsible for helping to implement a new project designed to expand our Special Education and Early Intervention mediation programs and reach more families from low-income, immigrant and other vulnerable communities. Though NYPI’s Special Education and Early Intervention mediation programs, a neutral mediator facilitates a dialogue to resolve any disagreements about a child’s educational or health-related services; these mediations prove to be invaluable to parents and service providers, empowering them to develop comprehensive and effective plans to accommodate children with disabilities. The Program Associate will be responsible for client intakes, case management, data collection and follow-up surveys for clients. In addition, the Program Associate will conduct outreach in targeted communities and build partnerships with other organizations that work with families in need of services. Opportunities for professional development in mediation are available, and the Program Associate will be expected to complete our Basic Mediation training and Apprenticeship Program to become a certified mediator.
Essential Job Functions of the Program Associate:
Creating an outreach plan for target populations
Developing appropriate outreach materials
Conducting outreach presentations throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan
Conducting intake sessions with parents and service providers
Scheduling mediation sessions
Inputting and maintaining database with case information, conducting case-closing data entry, and filing and maintaining hard copy files, as needed
Gathering data for funder and other statistical reports
Conducting follow-up surveys with clients
Participating in state-wide meetings and research projects with partners
Responding to general phone and online inquiries regarding New York Peace Institute services, and providing support to other NYPI staff members
Attending all relevant program trainings and meetings and participating in staff-wide activities and events
Preferred skills and qualifications:
Bilingual (English and Spanish) – required
College degree
Must possess excellent organizational, listening, oral and written communication skills
Ability to show initiative is essential
Strong interpersonal and phone communication skills and willingness to speak in front of groups of people
Knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint), databases and data entry is preferred
Must be flexible, able to work independently within a team-based environment, and be willing to adapt responsibilities according to program needs
Willingness to travel locally throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan
Knowledge of and/or interest in Special Education regulations and the NYC school system
Knowledge of and experience in mediation preferred but not required
Passion and interest in supporting children with disabilities and their families
