Part-Time Forest Explorers Instructor

hr@queensbotanical.org – Posted by hr@queensbotanical.org Queens, New York, United States

Job Description

Mission
Updated by Board of Trustees on December 15, 2009
Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are
celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs
and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY19, the Garden served over 250,000 visitors, including 32,000 schoolchildren, and 48,215 through outreach efforts offsite. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.
Program Description: Forest Explorers is an outdoor drop-off program for children ages 2-6 at QBG. Rooted in the traditions of the Forest School model, this early childhood program nurtures self-confidence, independence and interconnectedness while deepening children’s connection to the natural environment in their own city. Through exploration-based learning, children uncover nature’s treasures, create meaningful community and develop trust in themselves and the world around them. As a community of educators and families, we consciously work to build an inclusive and diverse community that supports the development of the whole child. Our educators put the social, emotional, and physical needs of the community first when making decisions.

Job Description: QBG seeks an Instructor to assist with the implementation of this program. This position assists with all aspects of the program including setup and breakdown of our outdoor classroom, co-facilitating class activities, attending and contributing to team meetings, participating in collaborative decision making and assisting with the care of the children.
The Instructor will work on a team of up to 8 teachers per season, working on various days of the week. Additionally, we hope this person will assist with creating new assessment models to evaluate the program’s success in commitment to its mission.

Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree (or in process) in education, early childhood education, or related field
● Experience working in an early childhood environment
● Ability to make decisions collaboratively as part of a team
● Be self-motivated, patient with children and a flexible team member
● Be able to lift heavy objects (tents, tables, bins with supplies, children)
● Be comfortable outside in all weather and prepared with proper attire
● Enthusiastic attitude with excellent communication and organizational abilities

Program Schedule: Start and end times have some flexibility each day. Program hours are 8:30am – 3:30pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in all four seasons.
