We are seeking a new member of our team to support and build our Environmental Justice, Climate and Community Revitalization Program. The program supports policies that advance environmental, climate, and energy justice and provide economic and social benefit to communities of color and low income communities. Specific near-term program objectives include building capacity in communities of color to advance climate solutions; reforming policy practices; shifting paradigms that centralize the voices of those most impacted by environmental injustice and climate change; and strengthening relationships between environmental organizations, organizations of color and others, such as governments, community based organizations (CBOs), academic, etc.
The successful candidate will be able to support our vision that communities speak for themselves and that communities of color should be supported to act and lead on environmental and climate issues.
In this role you will:
Convene and support a cross-cultural collaborative of organizations and leaders of color to advance a shared vision and agenda around the environment and climate action
Work to build capacity in NWF member organizations to participate and support in environmental and climate justice
Help build partnerships between organizations of color, the environmental community and the conservation community
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Environmental Justice stakeholders, leaders and networks, NWF staff and affiliates, members, partners, key interest groups and individuals, including policy makers
Manage the Environmental Justice analysis contract
Develop policy proposals for ensuring fair and equitable impacts and benefits for communities of color and low income communities
Analyze Federal and state legislation and programs for their impact on environmental justice
Develop and manage the Environmental Justice Advisory Committee
Participate as a permanent member of NWF’s Equity and Justice Steering Committee and ensure integration between the environmental justice and equity programs
Support and monitor implementation of state and local NWF initiatives
Develop and maintain collaboration between current justice programs at NWF
Produce fact sheets, reports and other communication tools to support policy proposals and project objectives
Investigate and analyze issues germane to the program, review relevant professional materials and communications on a continuing basis
Design public education materials; write articles, alerts and opinion pieces
Prepare and present public comments and testimony, educates policy makers
Actively seek earned media and serve as a spokesperson, as directed
Represent NWF at public and community events
Educate and engage NWF members and affiliates through website communications, articles in magazine, e-newsletter, personal interactions and other communications
Write program-related grant proposals; meet with foundation officers and other potential funders; write progress reports
Collaborate with the NWF Equity, Communications, Research, Advocacy, Philanthropy, and Digital Media teams to develop concepts and content
Actively seek new sources of financial support in collaboration with the development team by cultivating new connections with potential donors or corporations
Qualifications:
Five plus years of professional experience performing similar job duties to those listed in this announcement is preferred
Strong expertise in environmental/racial justice is preferred
Demonstrated ability to apply an environmental justice analysis lens to public policy
Demonstrated ability to manage contracts
Understanding of, and experience working with, diverse populations, specifically communities of color with representation in the: African, African American, Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, Native American, Pacific Islander communities
Proven ability to bring stakeholders together around shared visions and work strategically to secure policy changes and other program objectives
Demonstrated connections in the social justice space
Strong writing and speaking skills, with experience in compelling prose that can move people to act
