Full-Time Assistant Registrar
Job Description
The Position:
The Jewish Museum seeks an Assistant Registrar to fulfill a broad range of collections and exhibitions registration responsibilities. The position’s chief responsibility is to manage registration activities for collection objects and to assist with registration for temporary exhibitions. This position requires knowledge of current professional museum registration standards and best practices, and works closely with Collections Management, Curatorial, and Operations staff.
Responsibilities Include:
- Coordinate and oversee installations in the museum’s permanent collection galleries
- Make arrangements for framing, mount making and conservation to prepare collection objects for installation
- Make arrangements for packing, shipping, couriers and installation of incoming loans
- Administer and coordinate domestic outgoing loans, including in-house reviews and object preparation
- Assist with temporary exhibition installations/de-installations, as assigned
- Coordinate packing and shipping for artwork under consideration for acquisition
- Perform condition reports on collection objects, loans and new acquisitions
- Oversee artwork viewing at committee meetings
- Assist with collections management projects, including data entry in TMS and collection inventories
- Work with Curatorial and Collections Management staff to track and manage collection conservation projects
- Update and maintain the museum’s Emergency Response and Recovery Plan and various preparedness initiatives, including training programs and supply inventories
- Oversee Receiving Room maintenance and inventory
- Serve as courier for loans and/or exhibitions
- Create and manage detailed computerized and paper records, including loan files, receipts, certificates of insurance, lender correspondence and loan agreements
- Obtain estimates, prepare detailed project budgets, track expenses and process invoices
Other duties and responsibilities:
- Manage projects related to deaccessions and abandoned property
- Organize and archive departmental files
- Assist with updating and maintaining departmental forms, procedures and schedules
- Assist in general office administration and various department projects
Requirements:
- Degree in Art History, Museum Studies, or related field (M.A. preferred)
- 3+ years registration experience, preferably at an art museum
- Knowledge of museum registration methods and standards for conservation, packing, shipping, art handling and installation
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, produce clear and effective schedules and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Demonstrated initiative, judgment and organization
- Familiarity with collections management databases, preferably TMS
- Art handling abilities preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
- Knowledge of Judaica and object materials helpful
