 WHAT YOU’LL DO:

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

With general guidance from the Director of Grant Management, the Sr. Accountant for Grants serves as a member of the accounting team, providing oversight and accountability for the strategic use of grant funding as an integral component of total organizational funding.  This position regularly collaborates with other members of the accounting team to ensure the full integration of grant budgets and related financial activities are managed in compliance with organizational policy and funder requirements; collaborates with Program Directors and others to provide guidance in relation to grant funding utilization, ensuring grant funding sources are fully leveraged and utilized in accordance with the organization’s adopted strategy; and assumes primary responsibility for the preparation of reports, budgets,  and work-papers as necessary for timely completion of reporting to Granters, the Single Audit and other monitoring activities.  The Senior Accountant for Grants is a grants position and reports to the Director of Grant Management.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with five years of non-profit experience is required.
  2. Minimum of three years of experience with public or privately funded grant compliance and reporting is required.
  3. Must pass criminal, child abuse and neglect, and sex offender background checks.
  4. Understanding of grant administration and budget development is required.
  5. Understanding of GAAP and GASB
  6. Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  7. Ability to provide timely and accurate grant and financial reports.
  8. Demonstrated high level of initiative, attention to detail and organizational skills.
  9. A desire and ability to learn.
  10. Critical and analytical thinking skills
  11. Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and accounting software packages, including report building. Proficiency with Blackbaud Financial Edge preferred.
  12. Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the finance industry.
  13. Ability to prepare financial reports and business correspondence.
  14. Exceptional customer service skills
  15. Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines, work well under pressure and in situations that require teamwork.
  16. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to translate financial information to non-financially trained staff.
  17. Demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  18. Demonstrated ability to calculate figures and amounts such as ratios, discounts, interest, and percentages.
  19. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  20. Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and committees.
  21. Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in the preparation of organization and private grant budgets under the direction of the Director of Grant Management and with the input of program staff.
  • Responsible for the monitoring of proper implementation of approved grant budgets (private) with regular analysis and reporting of spending and variance trends and recommendations for action, in cooperation with all stakeholders.
  • Works cooperatively with the Director of Grant Management and program staff in the implementation and practical application of accounting and finance recommendations and systems as needed.
  • Oversees verification of all grant and contract expenditures and fiscal commitments for appropriateness.
  • Oversees and/or leads preparation of general ledger journal entries, fixed asset tracking, monthly balance sheet reconciliation, release from restrictions, and Investment reconciliations.
  • Oversees verification of all account coding, ensuring appropriateness in relation to grant and contract expenditures, fiscal commitments, and approved budgets.
  • Maintains proper and consistent accounting records of all financial functions of the organization.
  • Assists with the production of monthly financial statements.
  • Reviews financial data for accuracy; identifies problems and supports day-to-day operations.
  • Assists with company cash projections and cash flow analysis.
  • Assists with education of staff relative to grants
  • Creates and maintains ad hoc financial reports upon request.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Grant Management, assumes leadership role in preparing for and facilitating annual single audits, preparation of form 990, Preparation of SEFA, implementation of recommendation and assist with communication with auditors.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely grant financial status reporting.
  • Collaborates with all YWCA and granter staff in a professional respectful manner.
  • Assists in distributing Financial Status Reports to the departmental Vice Presidents on a monthly basis
  • Assists in regular analysis and reporting of spending and variance trends compared to budgets and historical data.
  • Supports policy development and offers advice regarding accounting and internal control issues, reporting needs, and policy review and changes.
  • Works cooperatively with Management Staff and accounting team in implementation of accounting and finance recommendations and systems as needed.
  • Complies with applicable local, state, and federal requirements, certifications and/or regulations.
  • Complies with organization policies and procedures.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Assists with related special projects as required.
  • Complies with Association policy regarding required reporting of child abuse, elder abuse, suicide, and homicide.
  • Safeguards confidential information gained because of job.
  • As a YWCA employee, projects a positive image of the Association and its programs to the community and the Association.
  • Works cooperatively with program participants, YWCA staff, volunteers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Participates in local, state, and national professional networks as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
