Job Description

We are looking for a Design Manager to oversee and coordinate the design phases of large-scale seismic mitigation projects for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Based in Seattle, Washington, the role involves collaborating with project development teams, architects, engineers, and consultants to ensure projects meet cost, schedule, and quality standards. You will lead design reviews, recommend value engineering alternatives, and ensure compliance with VA planning and design guidelines. The Design Manager will support Project Managers in developing project plans, addressing variances, and ensuring constructability. This role requires effective communication and leadership to guide cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee assigned design projects, ensuring alignment with VA planning and design goals.
  • Assist Project Managers in developing and maintaining the Project Management Plan (PMP) specific to the design phase.
  • Work with Project Development Teams (PDT) to define project scope, optimize efficiency, and ensure lifecycle cost-effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with Architects/Engineers (AEs) and consultants to meet project cost and time parameters.
  • Lead design reviews, identify variances, and propose corrective measures to ensure project integrity.
  • Recommend value engineering alternatives to improve cost efficiency and project performance.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and ensure that designs meet sustainability and functionality goals.
  • Review contracts, scopes of work, specifications, and codes to ensure compliance with VA standards and project milestones.
  • Support the drafting of procurement documents and provide input into procurement strategies (without signing authority).
  • Provide guidance and support to cross-functional teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering
  • Minimum of 4 years managing building design projects, ensuring timely completion within budget
  • Experience coordinating with Project Development Teams and optimizing project scope
  • Preferred: Experience with medical facility planning and seismic mitigation projects
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficiency in analyzing technical and cost data
  • Familiarity with acquisition policies and regulations
  • Ability to guide and support cross-functional teams effectively
