Definition
Under direction, performs and coordinates athletic training services for intercollegiate athletes, including prevention, emergency/first aid response, assessment, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries as well as athletic conditioning and training; administers onsite care, including first-aid to athletes as needed during practice sessions, and sporting events; assesses athletic injuries and common illnesses; develops and facilitates individual care and rehabilitation plans for athletes; confers and coordinates with team physicians to review athletes’ medical histories and conduct non-invasive physical examinations to assist in screening for existing or potential medical issues and determine their ability to practice or compete; guides and advises athletes and coaches on matters pertaining to conditioning, diet, rest, exercise, and injury prevention; develops and facilitates a variety of physical conditioning, training programs to enhance an athletes’ strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervision
Works under the direct supervision of the department manager.
Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.
Work Schedule
Fall work schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 4:30am-1pm (emphasis on Football)
Fridays and Saturdays contingent on Sports Games
Sundays and Mondays off.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification.
• Performs and coordinates athletic training services for intercollegiate athletes, including prevention, emergency/first aid response, assessment, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries as well as athletic conditioning and training.
• Administers onsite care, including first-aid to athletes as needed during practice sessions, and sporting events; assesses athletic injuries and common illnesses; develops and facilitates individual care and rehabilitation plans for athletes; advises coaching staff of the severity of injuries incurred by athletes and their ability to resume practice and re-enter competition.
• Confers and coordinates with team physicians to review athletes’ medical histories and conduct non-invasive physical examinations to assist in screening for existing or potential medical issues and determine their ability to practice or compete.
• Applies therapeutic and protective bandaging, wrapping, strapping, and padding; supplies and assists with ice, heat, straps, braces, and/or other adaptive equipment, as needed; determines appropriate courses of action and assists athletes with rehabilitation programs.
• Administers therapeutic modalities such as hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound, cryotherapy, massage, and related treatments.
• Measures and fits braces, guards, and other protective devices.
• Travels with athletic teams and is responsible for attending to the routine medical needs of injured athletes in the absence of the team physician.
• Files insurance claims on behalf of athletes and communicates regularly with insurance companies.
• Administers medical and personal information records and complies with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations; authorizes the release of medical records when appropriate.
• Operates and utilizes a variety of first aid and adaptive equipment; cleans and disinfects work area and equipment, as needed.
• Maintains injury and incident reports in a computerized database.
• Develops and facilitates a variety of physical conditioning and training programs to enhance an athlete’s strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination; assists students with specialized therapeutic and conditioning exercises; performs demonstrations and ensures athlete understanding of proper exercise techniques and procedures.
• Guides and advises athletes and coaches on matters pertaining to conditioning, diet, rest, exercise, conditioning, and related matters.
• May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Two (2) years of athletic training experience.
Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements:
• Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
Knowledge of:
• Athletic training programs and activities.
• Fundamentals of nutrition and diet and impact on athletic activities.
• Principles of human anatomy, kinesiology, and physiology.
• First-aid and related emergency procedures.
• Symptoms of and treatments for common athletic injuries and common illnesses.
• Athletic training tools, machines, and equipment used in competitive sports.
• Laws, regulations, standards, and/or requirements applicable to areas of assignment.
• Standard office software and modern office equipment.
Ability to:
• Plan and implement athletic training programs and activities.
• Evaluate the condition and progress of athletes in training and conditioning programs and modify programs to meet individual needs.
• Use standard athletic training tools, machines, modalities and equipment, including a hydra collator, a whirlpool bath, electrostimulation, and ultrasound equipment.
• Administer therapeutic and first-aid treatments to injured athletes.
• Evaluate the extent of athletic injuries by safely applying specific tests on the involved area.
• Measure height, weight, pulse, blood pressure, and body composition.
• Make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
• Research, interpret, apply, and explain laws, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to areas of assignment.
• Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.
• Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.
• Maintain hard copy and electronic files and records.
• Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines.
• Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others.
• Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.
• Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.
• Work and perform duties independently.
• Perform and prioritize multiple tasks.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:
The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Mobility: frequent standing and walking for long periods; occasional kneeling, crouching, pushing, and pulling; occasional reaching above to reach items in athletic storage/lockers and on athletic fields.
• Dexterity: frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequent grasping to handle individual athletic equipment, gear, and material; write and take notes; and feel individual objects.
• Lifting: frequent lifting of papers, files, equipment, and material weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close-up work.
• Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and speaking in person and on the telephone.
• Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent contact with others, including extensive public contact; frequent deadlines and scheduled sporting events.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
• Work is performed indoors in athletic department offices as well as outdoors at athletic fields and sport complexes in varied weather conditions.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids/spills, contaminated products, and other environmental hazards.
