Position Description:

This position is responsible for performing a variety of survey support assignments including reviewing digital design data for constructability using modern survey technology. This position reviews the electronic survey methods and procedures applicable to perform and review surveys as well as provides survey support to MDOT under the supervision of a professional surveyor.

This position uses modern survey technology, like automated machine grading (AMG) and other survey equipment, necessary for construction support from design to field.

This position also reviews MDOT Survey Standards and Construction Specifications to review survey deliverables and provide support to MDOT survey and construction staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Review, test and implement software utilized by MDOT for construction inspection (e.g., calculate the volume of an area for a pay item) and AMG (e.g., taking a model and putting it into equipment to ensure the field work is conducted appropriately based on global positioning system (GPS), elevation, etc.). Make recommendations for changes/enhancements to ensure the software will work appropriately in the field.
  • Utilize Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and field software with the survey equipment in the field for construction inspections (e.g., staking, checking elevation).
  • Review MDOT workflows for uploading field collected survey data to CAD for calculating pay item quantities and workflows for importing design data to construction field data collectors for inspection. Once proficient, use these workflows on a variety of survey support assignments (e.g., calculating volumes and areas) for Survey Construction Specialist review.
  • Review design submittals for errors that would make it un-constructable. Make recommendations to the survey construction specialist on solutions to problems encountered.
  • Report survey equipment and software problems to the survey construction specialist.  Once problems are identified, work with the specialist to resolve.
  • Conduct land surveys, engineering surveys, control surveys, and construction layout utilizing survey deliverable submission procedures and standards and specifications and while receiving instruction and guidance from a professional surveyor.

The function of the Survey Support Section is to support the creation of property surveys, control surveys and engineering design surveys for the purpose of gathering data required for road and bridge design and to provide resource data to the department and other public and private agencies. The Survey Support Section also supports construction surveying activities and is involved in automated support for surveying functions. Additionally, the Survey Support Section maintains oversight of survey data submitted by consultant survey firms. This position provides support for the section functionality through resource development, deliverable review, maintaining competency with hands on application of current technology, technology testing, providing training assistance, and providing other support related duties.

Basic Requirements for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials:
Possession of a bachelor’s degree with a major in surveying.

Experience:

Land Surveyor 9
No specific type or amount is required.
Land Surveyor 10
One year of professional experience conducting land surveys equivalent to a Land Surveyor 9.
Land Surveyor P11
Two years of professional experience conducting land surveys equivalent to a Land Surveyor, including one year equivalent to a Land Surveyor 10.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

Ability to:

  • Apply knowledge of land surveying to land surveying activities and techniques.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Maintain records.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.

Knowledge of:

  • The principles and practices of land surveying.
  • Surveying instruments and equipment and their use and care.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Possession of a Part 107 drone pilot license within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
