Job Description

Everytown Law seeks a creative, thoughtful, and talented litigator to serve as Associate Counsel or Counsel, depending on experience.

Everytown Law is part of Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, the education, research, and litigation arm of the nation’s leading gun violence prevention organization. We are the largest and most experienced team of impact litigators in the country dedicated to advocating in the courts for gun violence prevention—one of the most pressing issues of our time.

We believe every person has the right to live free from gun violence. It’s our mission to make this belief a reality. We are looking for attorneys who want to use their litigation skills and public-spirited ambitions to join us in advocating on behalf of survivors and others directly affected by gun violence, including marginalized communities. Our clients include students, parents, civil rights organizations, domestic violence coalitions, and cities and counties.

Everytown Law engages in two primary areas of litigation:

  1. Affirmative litigation to (a) seek accountability for and reform of the gun industry’s dangerous business practices, (b) take on dangerous gun lobby-backed laws that conflict with constitutional protections, and (c) enforce gun violence prevention laws.
  2. Defense of common-sense, life-saving gun laws against Second Amendment challenges in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision in NYSRPA v. Bruen, under the umbrella of the

Recent cases and successes in our affirmative litigation work include: suing a major gun manufacturer on behalf of the City of Chicago due to the easy convertibility of its pistols to fully automatic machine guns; obtaining a $5 million settlement against the largest ghost gun manufacturer in the country; and representing survivors of mass shootings in Buffalo, New York; Uvalde, Texas; Highland Park, Illinois; Louisville, Kentucky; and Boulder, Colorado, in cases against manufacturers and retailers of firearms and firearms accessories.

SCOPE OF WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Counsel/Counsel will have a high level of responsibility and self-direction. The primary responsibilities of the Associate Counsel/Counsel will be to work with our Affirmative Litigation team as follows:

  • Developing and implementing Everytown Law’s nationwide federal and state court affirmative litigation practice including through legal research, factual development, and strategic analysis.
  • Litigating affirmative cases in conjunction with national and local co-counsel, including case management and strategy.
  • Drafting and editing memos, complaints, pleadings, and briefs.
  • Undertaking all aspects of pre-trial litigation, including fact development, discovery, motion practice, depositions, and expert testimony.
  • Working directly with clients, including survivors of gun violence and governmental entities.
  • Preparing cases for trial and potentially trying cases.
  • Working closely with teams across the organization to advance sensible gun regulation.
  • Participating in some interviewing and supervising of legal interns (depending on experience) and some public speaking, including presentations to law school students and at other public interest events.
  • Participating in team and professional development, including retreats, trainings, and other events.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. and membership in a state bar.
  • 3+ years of litigation experience required for associate counsel.
  • 5+ years of litigation experience required for counsel.
  • Excellent legal analysis, research, writing, and editing skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and an ability to explain complex legal concepts to both legal and non-legal audiences.
  • Oral argument and/or deposition experience a plus.
  • Clerkship experience a significant plus.
  • Candidates transitioning from the private sector are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience working with marginalized communities and survivors of trauma a plus.
  • A commitment to social justice, an interest in gun violence prevention litigation, and a passion for Everytown’s mission of preventing gun violence in America.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team and with other lawyers.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and staff in a fast-moving environment and to deliver timely and high-quality work.
  • Strong work ethic, sense of humor, flexibility, creativity, and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a sometimes-hectic, open-plan office.

This is a full-time, hybrid remote/in-office position that can be based in either New York City or Washington, D.C. The salary range for this position is $105,000 to $125,000 per year, depending on experience.
