Full-Time Urban Forestry Specialist

Job Description

The role:

This role offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the urban landscape. As the steward of 17,000 urban street trees and associated greenery, you’ll be at the forefront of ensuring the Region’s natural assets are not only preserved but thrive.

 

From developing innovative strategies for inventory management to spearheading conservation efforts, every decision you make will contribute to the Region’s environmental sustainability and the well-being of residents.

 

You’ll be responsible for overseeing capital projects and maintenance contracts. Your expertise will guide the region in navigating challenges and providing support to various department and stakeholders.

 

It provides the opportunity to collaborate and build partnerships with local municipalities and conversation authorities to complete tree replacement programs. Together you will work towards a common goal of enhancing green spaces and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.

 

In this role you will:

 

Contract Administration:

  • Develop and administer various tree installation, replacement, and maintenance contracts.
  • Schedule contractors for tree removal, stump grinding and the replacement of tree assets.
  • Pre-planting inspection of a site to identify constraints, impacts or conflicts (Ex: Utilities) and protection solutions for existing trees ahead of construction activities.
  • Detailed review of engineering drawings, confirming all plant material adheres to contract specifications and that the material is planted as per specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with the terms of the contracts. Coordinate with purchasing and provide vendor performance reports where necessary. Ensure that deficiencies are addressed and rectified during the warranty period after planting. Track, verify and approve invoices.
  • Participate as a team member on roads capital projects and provide comments.

Urban Forestry Management:

  • Create a 5-year plan for management on the health of Regional trees and shrubs.
  • Prepare and direct a program of inspections, trimming, block pruning, mulching and emergency response.
  • Identify and diagnose tree disease and insect damage. Specify a course of action.
  • Work with internal departments to develop a process to collect data to update the Region’s tree and shrub inventory. Update the inventory and perform a Level 1 and Level 2 risk assessment as part of the inventory process. Arrange for the mapping of the tree locations in ArcGIS.
  • Generate maintenance schedules, manage contractors, develop a work flow process that collaborates with other internal departments.
  • Prepare a budget and business case for the implementation of activities.

Coordination of Projects with Local Municipalities and Conservation Authorities:

  • Meet with partners on a regular basis to address Regional goals for tree replacements that work with both the vision of the local municipalities and meet the direction of the Conservation Authorities.
  • Collaborate on planting plans including design of shrub beds under trees to improve permaculture.

Other:

  • Respond to Councillors and residents about issues relating to urban forest inventory.
  • Provide opinion on other issues related to urban forestry including climate change, planning policy, green infrastructure management and heritage designation of trees.
  • May be asked to inspect, manage or administer the contract for other regional road infrastructure assets as required.
  • May be asked to evaluate landscaping replacement quotes and arborist reports for Real Property Asset Management.

What the role requires:

  • Member in good standing as a Registered Professional Forester in the Ontario Professional Foresters Association (OPFA). ISA Certified Arborist with experience in the industry of urban forest management. Tree Risk Assessment Qualifications under the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) preferred.
  • Graduate from an approved diploma program in Arboriculture, Horticulture or Natural Resources Management; or a BSc. in Forestry, Environmental Sciences or Ecosystem Science and Management or equivalent experience horticulture/forestry experience. Membership in the Canadian Institute of Forestry, International Society of Arboriculture or similar organization preferred.
  • Knowledge of urban forest principles and concepts related to transportation planning, design, construction and maintenance including hazard tree assessment and understanding of tree health and survival in a rural and urban context.
  • Knowledge of tree biology and physiology, including strong tree identification skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable Acts, legislation and by-laws including The Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape drawings to ensure application of horticultural and forestry elements.
  • Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing Microsoft programs such as word processing, spread sheet and database applications and G.
  • Interpersonal skills to present, communicate and inform diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a team environment.
  • A valid “G” driver’s license in good standing.
  • CSA work boots required.

Work Mode & Job Location: In this role you will have the ability to work remotely and attend on-site when required based on operational requirements at the 2 Copper Rd., Brampton, ON worksite.  The frequency of on-site activities may vary on a weekly basis and based on operational requirements. Your remote work location must be located within the province of Ontario.

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week
