As a UX Researcher, you will be part of a collaborative group of creative problem solvers passionate about innovation and informing the future of this organization. You will gather information and data to help us understand how to close capability gaps and present actionable courses of action that will influence the Kessel Run All Domain Operations Suite (KRADOS) Enterprise roadmap for years to come. KRADOS is Kessel Run’s flagship suite of applications supporting warfighters in Air Operations Centers around the world.
Please note: Our headquarters is located at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Candidates who have the ability to work in person at Hanscom AFB 1-2x per week are strongly preferred. We will provide relocation assistance to those who wish to move to the local area. We will only consider exceptional remote candidates.
Opportunity
Using a variety of quantitative, qualitative, contextual, generative/exploratory and evaluative research methods, you will gather and present evidence that will drive the delivery of the Kessel Run Enterprise Solution. Always keeping the Kessel Run goal of delivering award winning software to the warfighter. As a UX Researcher focused on research and discovery your responsibility will be to ensure that our software continues to work towards solving for the enterprise solution by informing day two delivery.
Role
As a UX Researcher on KRADOS you will work on a combination of Future Facing (Strategic) discovery and priority Delivery Research (Tactical). During future facing research you will work alongside a small design research team and on a balance team (Product, Engineering & Design) during the priority delivery.
- Future Facing (Strategic) Research focuses on understanding the problems that must be solved to achieve the next attainable outcome. You will work autonomously to lead research efforts while coordinating and collaborating with a small design research team. Responsibilities include conducting discovery, user research and framing that provide credible and defensible data to support an achievable outcome. Artifacts and outcomes will be presented to internal leadership stakeholders to inform and influence the KRADOS roadmap strategy.
- Delivery (Tactical) Research intends to clarify and support the delivery of a known KRADOS epic or focus area on the roadmap. You will lead research while working and collaborating with product teams. Discovery research and data gathering will involve understanding problem spaces, drafting artifacts, and working with Product to scope epics and identify the work and teams involved in delivering the capability epic. Team artifacts and outcomes will be presented to product teams and leadership to provide a transparent background, direction and a definition of the work that needs to be delivered by each team.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with developers and product, coordinate and execute all phases of user research, including authoring research documents, developing screeners, recruiting potential participants, developing consent forms, surveys, test plans and interview discussion guides and moderating usability lab sessions, lab setup and consolidation of usability findings database and reports.
Plan, schedule and facilitate smooth-running user studies, interviews, and other related interactions with customers and users in support of user experience team projects.
Creating and maintaining project schedules, and advising project teams in planning user research activities.
Act as an excellent liaison between customers, user research participants and our cross-functional product team members at KR.
- Assist product teams with research spikes and the best user research methodology to meet both user and business objectives
- Create, present and maintain project documentation including research plan(s), schedules, status and meeting reports, usability findings database, and research insight library – share-out insight reports post travel
- Partner closely with the KRADOS, architecture team and or partnering portfolio team(s) on research and travel when appropriate
- Work as a balanced team alongside product and engineering to conduct research, discovery and framing efforts
- The team is responsible for generating proposal presentations and research finding COAs, framing outcomes and advocating for improvement recommendations that feed the OpsC2 Branch-level roadmap
- Prepare research findings deliverables such as reports, presentations, comparative analysis, service blueprints, user flows, user journey maps, storyboards, use case COAs, personas, etc. as appropriate for each project
- Assist in establishing UX research best practices; identify and define best research methods for KRADOS Design; and assist in building UX research repository, resource hub and training materials
Key Qualities
- Strong verbal and written communications skills coupled with a high attention to detail
- Excellent observational skills and a great analytical ability
- Demonstrated experience developing and conducting user research, including lab and field-based user studies, heuristic evaluations, cognitive walkthroughs and contextual inquiries
- Demonstrated experience developing personas, scenarios and work flows based on user research
- Demonstrated ability to conduct usability tests, concept prototypes; familiarity with Figma
- Understand technical concepts related to system architecture (understand the impact and approach to adding a new service or product to existing ecosystem)
- Technical background and/or ability to understand complex technical concepts related to user workflows and the impact to upstream and downstream consumers/products
Job Requirements
- 3-5 years of prior experience as a UX Researcher
- Ability to obtain a Security Clearance
- Must be a US Citizen
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or other comparable social science degree
- Ability to package user research in a highly consumable format and communicate to product teams and internal stakeholders
- Ability to travel on site (Air Operation Centers, etc) as necessary to conduct user research
- Ability to collaborate throughout the research process with the Balanced Team (Design, Product, Engineering)
- You are a U.S. citizen and are eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here)
This is a Federal civilian service position within the United States Air Force. We are hiring at the equivalent of a GS-12 up to GS-13 level for this position. This means you can expect a base salary of $74,441 to $115,079 multiplied by your locality rate, based on your experience. You can find your locality definition here and see the pay tables for the GS scale here. Our headquarters is located at Hanscom AFB, MA which would translate to a range from $98,240 to $151,870.
