Please note: Our headquarters is located at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Candidates who have the ability to work in person at Hanscom Air Force Base 1-2 times per week are strongly preferred. The Position

We are looking for a Software Engineering Lead for the KRADOS application — Kessel Run All Domain Operations Suite (KRADOS) — that modernizes Command & Control of Airpower by re-engineering processes and replaced a suite of legacy Command & Control systems with highly secure and resilient set of modern applications.

What You Will Do

At Kessel Run, architecture — application, platform, data, integration, & security — is paramount. Our applications need to be operationally secure, available, and effective 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As a Software Engineering lead, you are part of the KR’s architecture and engineering organization. You will take direction from the KR Architecture Leadership on the appropriate technical standards, architectural and technical design principles, best practices, and guidelines, and, in turn, provide direction to the software engineers under you. You will readily and eagerly accept accountability for the quality of their work. You will also ensure the application meets the architectural ‘-ilities”, especially security, availability, resiliency, scalability, performance, maintainability over the long-term, operability, and interoperability. You will carefully select architectural solutions and approaches that result in warfighting applications that can be maintained and supported by Kessel Run over the long-term, independent of people and personalities.

The Software Engineering lead is assigned to work on specific applications and collaborates with the Product Lead and Design Lead to meet Product and Architectural objectives.

Who You Are

  • You have 5+ years of Software Development experience with demonstrable experience leading teams; hands-on experience building and maintaining production software using agile and lean methodologies and 12-factor principles in fast-paced product organizations.
  • You have strong technical skills with Spring, SpringBoot, React, and API design
  • You earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or similar.
  • You have experience with virtualization, including containers and orchestration.
  • You have strong technical and/or architectural experiences.
  • You have expertise in software engineering and building rugged and resilient Cloud-Native 12 factor applications
  • You can translate the architectural direction into concrete, written architectural requirements to vendors, can monitor and assess vendor performance, and can take corrective action rapidly if needed.
  • Superb communication skills, both written and oral, and exceptional time management.
  • You don’t mind working in older systems and technologies, even though the target is to re-architect, rebuild, virtualize and refresh them.
  • You have experience working with data/integration partners.
  • You have experience supervising and mentoring others.
  • A service mentality – you look to help others.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

  • Overseeing and being accountable for ensuring that the technical direction for a suite of related applications and services,  is aligned with the direction provided by Kessel Run’s architectural leadership. taking into consideration the problem space aligned with the organization’s vision and mission.
  • Breaking down requirements, creating plans and executing them are mandatory skills.
  • Architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
  • Working with resources at your disposal, identifying areas of opportunity; weak points and correcting them, including external contracting companies that are partners with the Air Force outsourcing development and other services.
  • Modernizing systems, off-the-shelf software or building in-house software, but also reshaping and upholding agile practices, step-by-step, and challenging bureaucracy and old waterfall methodologies. You will define engineering standards and best practices, fostering a continuous improvement mindset with our engineering staff.
  • Growing and mentoring junior engineers and mentoring functional partners without modern, industry-leading software and technology experience.
  • Communicating, both written and verbal, with non-technical peers and stakeholders to develop strategies.
  • Driving teams to develop automated testing, testing plans and encouraging test-driven development culture.

Additional Information

This is a Federal civilian service position within the United States Air Force. We are hiring at the equivalent of a GS-14 up to GS-15 level for this position. This means you can expect a base salary of $104,604 to $159,950 multiplied by your locality rate, based on your experience. You can find your locality definition here and see the pay tables for the GS scale here. Our headquarters is located at Hanscom AFB, MA which would translate to a range from $138,046 to $191,900.
