Full-Time Deputy Director of Local Government Affairs
Job Description
Everytown for Gun Safety, the nation’s largest gun violence prevention advocacy group, is seeking a senior leader to serve as Deputy Director of Local Government Affairs. The Deputy Director of Local Government Affairs will play a key role in driving local campaigns and initiatives across the country. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in city government, ideally having worked for a mayor, and possess strong people management skills. Additionally, they will demonstrate strategic planning and innovative thinking as they work alongside Associate Directors of Local Government Affairs to build out tailored gun safety programs for mayors and other local government officials.
This position reports to the Senior Director of Local Government Affairs and will be based in New York City.
Responsibilities:
Local Campaign and Initiative Strategy and Management:
- Develop and oversee strategy for local campaigns and initiatives across the country, providing support to Associate Directors as needed.
- Support long-term planning and goal-setting for the Local Government Affairs team. Collaborate with government affairs colleagues, field operations, legal, and communications teams to develop tools and strategies for distributive local campaigns executed by Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers.
- Maintain expertise in gun violence prevention policy to advocate for common-sense policies and oppose measures that endanger communities.
- Stay abreast of the political landscape regionally and nationally to deliver local gun violence prevention legislation and interventions.
- Represent Everytown at conferences and events, and participate in issue-specific or long-term campaign teams as directed by the Senior Director.
Team Coordination and Management:
- Directly manage and mentor three Associate Directors who oversee local campaigns, supporting their development and execution of strategic, tactical, and communications plans.
- Collaborate with the Associate Directors of Law Enforcement and Mayoral Outreach to develop and execute strategies connecting local campaigns and regional pod work with the broader efforts of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition and law enforcement engagement goals.
- Represent the Senior Director of Local Government Affairs in senior team meetings when needed.
- Provide reports to the Senior Director of Local Government Affairs and support them as needed, including the development and execution of priority special projects.
Partnerships:
- Cultivate, maintain, and own strategic partnerships with key national organizations to support local government affairs efforts, deploying Associate Directors to strategic conferences and other relevant opportunities.
- Frequently meet, strategize with, and support other departments and contractors at Everytown, relaying important updates and next steps back to the Local Government Affairs team.
- Create and reinforce systems that build workflows and synergy between the work of the Local Government Affairs team and other departments at Everytown.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of relevant experience in advocacy, government affairs, or related fields, with 2+ years of experience specifically in city government.
- Strong people management skills with a track record of coaching and developing staff.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
- Deep understanding of gun violence prevention policy and advocacy.
- Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
- Commitment to advancing common-sense gun violence prevention solutions.
- Understand how stereotypes, bias, and forms of racism in America (including structural racism, implicit bias, gender bias, religious bias, ageism, and bias based on gender identity or sexual orientation) impact our society, with an expectation that you will develop an ability to articulate the connection between these large societal issues and the disproportionate impact of gun violence on specific demographic groups in America
- Understand how dynamics of power, voice, and privilege impact one-on-one and group interactions, and a commitment to using power, voice, and privilege to make our movement more equitable
- Flexibility to travel and represent Everytown at external events as needed
The annual salary range for this position is $135,000-$145,000. Everytown offers a generous benefits package including Medical, Dental and Vision benefits, PTO, 401K Match, Education Assistance and more.
