Job Description
Post-Doctoral Fellow role of miniprotein genes and long non-coding RNAs in human disease
We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow who will develop and apply statistical and/or machine learning methods to large datasets of genomic and transcriptomic data in order to better understand the role of miniprotein genes and long non-coding RNAs in human disease, in particular in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions such as autism and schizophrenia. This position will be co-supervised by Dr. Brian Kalish (Scientist, Program in Neuroscience and Mental Health) and Dr. Brett Trost (Scientist, Molecular Medicine Program) at SickKids. The position will be full-time, in-person, and entirely dry lab-based. The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of extension.
In this role, you will:
- analyze whole-genome sequencing data and/or transcriptomic data from large cohorts of families affected by autism and other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions;
- collaborate with scientists specializing in a variety of disciplines, including neurobiology, computational biology, biostatistics, child psychiatry, and epidemiology;
- provide assistance in mentoring junior trainees, including graduate students and summer students;
- present your research findings at conferences related to human genetics and genomics; and
- publish your findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Required qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant discipline, such as genetics/genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or computer science.
- Programming experience in languages such as Python and R.
- Ability to work independently and exhibit the initiative to explore new and innovative research directions based on recent findings in the literature.
- Strong oral and written communications skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in (bio)statistics and/or machine learning.
- Experience working in a Linux-based environment.
- Experience using high-performance computing infrastructure.
