Full-Time Director, Pre-Health Advising

Job Description

The Director of Pre-Health Advising at Brandeis oversees the University’s Pre-Health Advising team and provides individual and group advising to students interested in pursuing acceptance into medical school, dental school, veterinary school, and other allied health profession schools (including physician assistant, physical therapy, optometry, and podiatry).  The Director chairs the Board of Pre-Health Advisors, a faculty and staff committee which provides evaluative information for the committee letter, and manages the Brandeis committee letter process. With colleagues, the Director composes or supervises the drafting of approximately 120 composite letters of support for candidates each year.  The Director supervises a team who are responsible for assessment of program effectiveness, development of innovative initiatives to prepare pre-health students for their future career path, advancing efforts to support underrepresented students pursuing health professions careers, and maintenance of the pre-health website and other on-line tools as well as the publication of any print materials.  As a member of the leadership team in Academic Services, the Director also works collaboratively with the staff and programs in Academic Services and with our campus partners.

 

Position Description:

 

Brandeis University seeks an experienced, innovative educator to lead a robust Pre-Health Advising team within Academic Services. The Director will:

  • Direct a growing program of advising for students and alumni interested in applying to medical or other health professions schools. This includes advising individual students and facilitating a robust group advising model (50%)
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate two professional staff members and 3-4 graduate and/or undergraduate students. (15%)
  • Supervise Assistant Director in efforts to create and maintain assessments for Pre-Health Advising and maintain statistical information regarding Pre-Health Advising activities and medical/health professions program admission outcomes.  (15%)
  • Direct the Brandeis Board process, which leads to a committee letter of recommendation.  Supervise the Board of Pre-Health Advisors, which includes faculty and pre-health advising staff. Provide knowledge and expertise to the Board and share outcomes of admission decisions.  Chair the Board and lead all required steps in the interview process, including supervising the composition of approximately 120 committee letters annually.  (10%)
  • Serve as a campus expert and resource to students, faculty and staff on medical and health professions programs.  Facilitate development of knowledge among other offices and academic departments regarding pre-health topics.  Foster relationships with department chairs and other faculty.  Act as the University’s pre-health professions spokesperson at Admissions and Orientation events, and communicate as needed with medical and health professions schools, and other internal and external partners. (10%)

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field required
  • At least 8 years of progressive experience in a higher education environment, including 3-5 years of supervisory/management experience.  A minimum of 5 years of advising experience, with at least 2 years of health careers advising.
  • Must be able to work with a wide range of students with different academic backgrounds and skills in a supportive manner.
  • Must be able to lead and mentor professional staff. Requires very strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently, and also be able to work as part of a broader team within Academic Services.
  • Must be comfortable with evolving technology and a paperless office environment.
