Controller
The Controller at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) directs and manages all financial activities of the organization to include the production of monthly and annual financial reports, maintenance of the accounting system, as well as a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the company’s financials. Supervising two direct reports, responsibilities include accounts payable (A/P) and accounts receivable (A/R); managing cash and investment accounts; analyzing operational data; recommending improvements in business processes; developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures; maintaining YBCA’s system of internal controls to ensure the integrity of the accounting system and protection of the organization’s assets. The Controller reports to the Chief Finance & Operations Officer (CFOO) and acts as a member of the expanded leadership team, directly impacting the success of the organization.
The salary range for this role is $115,00 – $150,000, dependent on experience.
Responsibilities
Leadership
- Serves as a member of the expanded leadership team, participates proactively in strategic planning, organizational goal setting, and morale building.
- Provides advice to the CFOO and CEO on compliance and risk matters.
- Manages, supervises, trains, and develops two Finance team members: the Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant.
- Develops, implements and manages the organization’s financial policies and procedures.
Accounting
- Maintains YBCA’s system of accounts, keeping books and records on all transactions and assets, ensuring the accuracy of the accounting system and record keeping.
- Oversees the organization’s payroll function, verifying the accuracy of payroll as well as the proper filing of all payroll tax returns and payroll tax deposits.
- Supervises the organization’s A/P and A/R functions, including proper handling of cash deposits.
- Manages the month- and year-end accounting closing processes; and responsible for the accuracy of all general ledger account balances.
- Ensures compliance with all GAAP requirements including nonprofit related FASB pronouncements.
- Assures protection of YBCA’s assets through internal controls and internal auditing; managing the asset and depreciation schedules.
- Acts as the liaison to the YBCA’s outside auditors, ensuring the audited financials and IRS forms are completed within six months of fiscal year end.
Financial Reporting
- Prepares accounting and financial reports required as a part of the day-to-day management of the organization.
- Responsible for expense allocations and preparing formatted financial statements for the published audited financial statements.
- Oversees the annual audit and preparation of the annual information returns and various reports to government agencies.
Minimum Requirements
- A minimum of 6 years of finance and accounting experience with a portion in a supervisory or management role (or combination of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with a minimum of 4 years’ relevant finance and accounting experience).
- Demonstrated ability to manage fiscal resources within budget parameters and provide accurate financial reports in a timely manner.
- Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), general ledger accounting, cost accounting, financial systems and internal control methodology.
- Experience with Excel, Microsoft Word and General Ledger software required.
- Precision and attention to detail in financial reporting and analysis.
- Ability to identify financial problems and implement effective solutions.
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and conflict management skills including diplomacy, tact and ability to compromise to find viable solutions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and presenting financial information clearly and concisely.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position is between $115,00 – $150,000 based on full-time hours, and includes a competitive benefits package.
