Job Description

The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner serves the citizens of Allegheny County by supporting law enforcement, the public defender’s office, district attorney’s office and judicial system by providing Medico-legal death investigation, forensic, clinical and environmental analysis, consultation and expert testimony. The office has the additional mission of using the knowledge obtained in this process to promote education and research into the key public health problems facing the citizens of the county such as gun violence, drug overdose, suicide, and other issues.

The Chief Medical Examiner will play a pivotal role in leading the department’s efforts to conduct medicolegal death investigations, forensic analyses, and environmental sample analyses to assist the citizens of Allegheny County, law enforcement, judicial court systems and health and environmental agencies. The position requires a leader who fosters a culture of professionalism, transparency, and the highest quality of work.

The Chief Medical Examiner must:

  1. Hold either a Medical Doctor degree or a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Possess a valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  3. Be board certified, or board eligible, by the American Board of Pathology in forensic pathology.
  4. Have had at least five years of experience as a practicing pathologist.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s core responsibilities include:

Supervise and Run Department Operations:

  • Oversee staff of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in conducting autopsies, death investigations, and operating the morgue, as well as oversee the county’s drug chemistry, environmental health, firearms, forensic biology, forensic toxicology, latent prints, mobile crime unit, and trace evidence analysis laboratories.

Ensure High-Quality Data:

  • Ensure the department maintains accurate and up-to-date case files on all deaths, fulfills its external reporting requirements to various Pennsylvania bureaus and departments, and compiles statistical data for publications and medical research.

Maintain Best Practices:

  • Ensure the continual review and update of Evidence Based Practices Standards within the office along with input from practices in other Medical Examiner systems and standards promulgated by the National Association of Medical Examiners.

Candidates should have at least fifteen years of experience, including experience managing full-service crime laboratories that include sections of toxicology, firearms/toolmarks, serology/DNA, fingerprint, environmental monitoring, drug chemistry and trace evidence, and a mobile crime scene investigation unit.

Anticipated annual salary: $270,000
