Part-Time Business Development Manager
Job Description
Position Summary
The Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges (The RP Group) is seeking a part-time (approximately 20 hours/week), experienced business development professional with a proven track record of developing and implementing business development plans for increasing visibility, raising revenues, and diversifying funding portfolios. The Business Development Manager will be responsible for helping The RP Group evolve its service offerings, engage new clients, increase revenue, and make a positive impact on society.
In addition, the Business Development Manager will oversee and facilitate business development that focuses on prospect-seeking and matching, and building and maintaining relationships. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to higher education and social justice and demonstrate skill sets at the intersections of business and resource development, marketing, and philanthropy, as well as a proven track record for meeting and exceeding annual nonprofit financial goals. It is important to note that this role does not entail prospecting for individual giving. This individual will report to the Executive Director and work closely with RP Group leadership. The Business Development Manager is a new position for the organization with the potential for the role to be expanded and elevated in the future. We are a fully remote organization–all employees must live in the state of California.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prospect-Seeking / Portfolio/Relationship Development
- Expands The RP Group’s business development portfolio, which includes identifying and applying for new business opportunities (e.g., foundation and corporate giving opportunities and sponsorships) and stewarding positive relationships with a growing base of funders
- Cultivates relationships with existing and new funders to secure new, repeat, and increased funding for research, professional development, and sponsorships
- Researches and identifies new business opportunities, staying abreast of current priorities and opportunities among existing and potential funders and sponsors
- Analyzes data to discover new development opportunities and set objectives to align with broader organizational goals
2. Plan Implementation, Coordination, and Collaboration
- Provides guidance for a cohesive and innovative communications strategy to increase the visibility and awareness of The RP Group’s work and position the organization as a thought leader in the field of community college research and professional development in California and beyond
- Assists with the development and implementation of marketing strategies
- Serves on the team that manages the organization’s new constituent relationship management (CRM)
- Keeps records current for all business development prospects and activities
- Attends meetings as necessary to report on opportunities and activities
- Development of Outreach Materials
- Provides guidance for a cohesive and innovative communications strategy to increase the visibility and awareness of The RP Group’s work and position the organization as a thought leader in the field of community college research and professional development in California and beyond
- Assists with the development and implementation of marketing strategies
- Develops and delivers compelling communications, proposals, presentations, and other content/messaging for generating leads, creating business opportunities; and establishing new partnerships that fund our research studies and professional development, and secure corporate donations and sponsorships for events
- Business Process Management
- Develops and implements an ongoing comprehensive, strategic business development plan with specific, measurable performance metrics that will enable The RP Group to diversify and increase funding
- Aligns business development plan with The RP Group’s strategic plan
- Monitors the business development plan’s performance metrics, and frequently reports interim results to The RP Group’s leadership
Minimum / Essential Required Qualifications
- Four-year degree in a relevant field, with a strong emphasis on business relationship management, including identification and stewardship using marketing tools and resources (or an equivalent amount of training and experience)
- Minimum of three years of experience in a business development and/or business marketing position, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, or research organization
- Demonstrated experience managing and maintaining existing client relationships
- Strong relationship-building skills; listening to and taking an interest in others and their goals
- Outstanding collaboration and leadership skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must possess the desire and capabilities to effectively cold call, cold email, and other forms of cold client introductions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in educational or youth-related nonprofits is highly preferred
- Experience developing and working with a CRM
Compensation range
$35,000 to $55,000 + pro-rated benefits based on 20 hours a week (86 hours a month), depending on relevant and demonstrated work experience.
Physical Requirements
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
